Good find @ Allstar imports

Post by dzx »

A friend of mine runs allstar imports in Denver, while down there running some errands the other day I came across some 17" prodrive rims with some Z rated Toyo tires. I picked up all four rims and tires for $500, one tire needed to be replaced because of a big slash across it. Went to a tire store in Denver and they quoted it as $180 dollars. Ended up picking one up in boulder for $160. Went home and put the tire on the rim then changed the wheels and tested the car out on Magnolia in the canyon where i live, the car corners extremely well, ride is a lot harder I guess because the tires are stiff as all hell, and the acceleration is noticeably slower, But i think they look pretty good and were a great find. I'll post pics when I have some time off work. For now, here is what the rims look like. http://www.bigwheels.net/wheel_view.jsp ... odel=GC-07

Cool.

Did you have the new tire shaved down to match the old tires?

What size tire?

I didn't notice any significant decline in acceleration when I went with the slightly larger WRX wheels/tires.

It's probably more of the weight issue than size.

Nah, the Prodrive GC-07's are pretty light. Like 17 pounds for a 17" rim. Aren't the stock Turbo wheels like 16.5lbs or something?

I didn't notice any real difference between my wrx wheels/tires and the gram lights I test fitted. But then again, those are Gram Lights.

The difference in rotational moment of inertia's bigger than the difference in weight though.

what vrg said. The weight's all around the outside edge of the wheels, making it harder to rotate them. I swear this has been mentioned in every wheel thread... :)

True, that's why a 17lb 16" rim will be "faster" than a 17lb 17" rim.

I'm just surprised that the acceleration difference is significant. Espically since Toyo tires are pretty light. The whole setup probably weighs the same as a WRX/RE92 combo and has the same overall outside diameter. A slight decrease in acceleration, but unlikely to be THAT noticable.

Maybe the stickier Toyos have a higher rolling resistance?

the reason why there was a massive decrease in acceleration is because they are actually speedline prodrive 7 rims which weigh a massive 20 lbs, completely neutralizing my lighweight flywheel. They look really nice so i'll keep them on at least until i get my transmission fixed since i can't race anyway, but im more into performance so i'll probably try to sell them and my old bmw and try to get some lightweight rims. They are 17's.

The oem 16" wrx wheels are lighter then the oem 15" turbo Legacy wheels. That said, I can still notice a difference in acceleration between the two. The Legacy wheels being faster. I have to say though that the OEM RE92's on the 16" wrx wheels are 205/55R16 which is bigger then the oem Legacy 195/60R15. When I get new tires I'll be getting 205/50R16 so that will really be the deciding factor as to which is faster.

20 pounds!? JESUS! That's ridiculous!

Each Toyo T1S weighs about 20 lbs as well, making each wheel around 41-42 lbs

Oh my God! That is WAY to heavy. Get rid of those. No rim should EVER weigh more than 18 pounds.
