Fuel Tank Clean Out

Curious if anyone has any suggestions about cleaning out the fuel tank. I've got it out, and would like to make sure there's not junk inside.

From what I could see initially there was what looked like a light coating of rust on everything....but I think it's somewhat normal for age and such.

I have heard of a quick trick for cleaning out rusted gas tanks. With the tank removed and all the gas drained out and dried, take a handful of clean washers and drop them into the tank. Be sure to count how many you drop in and make sure that it is the same number you take out!!! With the washers in the tank, shake the hell out of it, if you have enough washers they should slip and slide over the rust and essentially “scrape” the inside of your gas tank, removing the rust/junk/deposits. Now that I am thinking about it, I would also remove the fuel pump assembly before you do this to prevent any damage to it. Also, the more washers you use, the more area will be cleaned. Once you feel the tank is good, remove the washer and I would guess clean the now loose rust scale/dust with water and a good degreaser or detergent. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I've heard of a similar technique using gravel rather than washers. Toss in some gravel, pour in some ethanol, and swish it all around. I guess if you use gravel it's good to weigh it before and after unless you can count the pebbles.

hmmm....not sure I want to do that. I may try some ethonal or cleaner......we'll see. The hump in the middle of the tank makes "swooshing" around any washers or fluid a little difficult.

Maybe you could do it separately on both sides, though... There's an access port on each side, right?
