Wow, I'm ghetto...

Post by BAC5.2 »

My front brakes are squealing like a BITCH, so I need to replace them.

I just got back from NAPA auto parts with a set of "Premium" brake pads and a properly sized wrench.

I'm gonna do my pads in my parking spot at school.

I can't get home in time before the Feed and Speed, and I really need brakes before I can get up there.

I'm pretty worried about having pads that "don't require break in."

Plus, the fact that the poster display deal they had showed 60-0 braking distances of 457 feet on "regular quality pads" that they sell, and 309 for the "premium" pads.

Oh well.

Yea, 457 is HORRENDOUS, even for a Semi!

Reguardless, I'll get the pads in tomorrow and I'll give a full on review of the drivability of the NAPA premium disc brake pads.

I have a strong feeling that these are going to catch on fire. Glad I don't have slotted rotors, or I'd throw sparks everywhere.

that doesn't even sound right, that's like 3 times the normal stopping distance.

honestly i'd take them back and get something better. How much thickness is left on your pads now?

Nah, not worth it. These are cheap and the best I can get in the 2 days I have to get brakes.

I, literally, have no pad life left. The wear indicators are rubbing the rotors when I'm off the brakes.

Jesus Phil. . . .what's WITH you and Laurel, anyway?

Both of you waited until there was literally no pads left to change them out. . .

Slackers.

On a sidenote: I just saw something VERY SEXY on my lunchbreak. . . Laurel, changing out her pads and rotors.

I'm just gonna wait until my squealer start, then do pads and rotors together.

That way I should have a lil more money set aside for it.

if the stopping distance is accurate (which it doesnt sound like it is) you are really willing to say that your safety is not worth spending a few extra bucks? Exactly how many mm's are left on your current pads? Doesnt kragen/checkers/schucks sell axis metalmasters?

Hardy - It's impossible that the distances are accurate. They are OEM quality pads, they wouldn't sell them if people kept dying from them. I think that causes a red flag pretty damn quick with NAPA.

My pads are to the point that I'm going to start damaging my rotors. And I need them NOW, before I drive to Matt's place for the meet. No Kragen/checkers/schuks around here. NAPA, Autozone, Advance are all we get here at school. I've never even seen any of those three (Kragen/checkers/schuks) around here or anywhere. When I do the WRX brake swap, I'll either use Metalmasters or Carbotech Bobcats.

Kragen, Checkers, and Shuck's are all the same as Advance Auto Parts.

NAPA usually carries Metal Masters under the Beck/Arnley name. The part number is the same as the regular Beck/Arnley part number but with an "M" at the end (like, 123456 becomes 123456M). If they don't have them on hand, though, you probably can't get them before Friday.

Hmm... same as Advance, huh? Well, I just might have to take a little road trip and see what the deal is. Actually, I'll call first...

Nope, no pads in stock, they'd be here next week. I don't trust my brakes to haul me to a stop at the end of the 1/4, so I'll just use the Napa pads and keep in mind the fact that my brakes are still stock.

Oh well.
Did the poster display mention a bc/bf Legacy? No, I'll bet it didn't. They have to have some frame of reference, some test platform-- like a Crown Vic, or Town Car, that would allow them to demonstrate the performance of their brake pads for a theoretical application.

If your car didn't exhibit a 457ft. 60-0 prior to putting these pads on, I wouldn't expect to see a 309ft. result after putting them on.

Bottom line? They are most likely pretty close to OEM performance. Also, they are most certainly better, and far safer, than your totally worn OEM pads. I bet they'll be as good as you need them to be for as long as you use them.

Steve, I think you misinterpreted what I was saying. I was simply commenting on the humor I found in the sign.

No, a Crown Vic or Towncar doesn't stop THAT poorly. Semi's stop faster than that.

I got the passenger side taken care of in about 10 minutes. The driver side, on the other hand, the caliper bolt was stripped. So tomorrow I gotta go to a shop and have them remove the bolt. *sigh* oh well.

Pfft, thats plenty of pad left, the last time i changed the brakes on my N/A legacy before it was impounded had no pad left at all, and the rotors were pretty damn grooved made lots of noise and took plenty of room but it still stopped. I would buy your brake pads at autozone, they have a lifetime warranty so you just bring back your used pads and they give you a new set free. Saves me a lot of money.
