Front spring fitment problem

I have one of the first legacies ever made (4/89)

I have some gc8 2.5rs springs that are brand spanky new from subaruparts.com that refuse to sit in the top spring seat. The seat is too big for the spring. I've never heard of this problem before. Any ideas?

go to the dealer and buy the proper upper spring perch, maybe? it's not overly expensive, either.

That's what im going to try next, but i understood that the spring perches were all the same, so im a little confused.
