I'd recommend getting a wallbro pump... just to eliminate that possibility, and you should need it anyways for the increased power and future mods.

Then you need to check out your injectors somehow. An oscilliscope would be nice, but don't know if you have access to one. Try swapping out some different injectors to see if the car will run then. Also, after a successful start and subsequent stall... pull ALL the plugs and see if one is completely soaked, as in way more than the others.

I personally doubt you have a spark problem. I think this lies somewhere in fueling. On a side note, when you idle the timing stays solid at 15 deg... once you push the clutch in and put the shifter in gear the car starts screwing with timing (to anticipate you letting the clutch out and accelerating, i guess). try watching on the VRmonitor to see if you injector pulse width goes wacko or timing does something retarded (no pun intended :?).

I just remembered something -- if the injector waveforms are bad, the ECU's supposed to notice. It looks for the inductive spike as the injector slams shut. So if he's not getting trouble codes for the injectors then they're probably not sticking.

I like the scantool suggestion though -- Matt, if you can cajole Scott into building the scantool cable he was intending to make and bringing his laptop over, it might be good to know what the ECU's doing with both spark and fuel when the trouble starts happening.

Nit pick: the ECU starts messing with idle timing when you get into gear, not when you release the clutch.

I'll bring my second ECU up to the Shootout. It's a few weeks away, but it might be worth a shot. Both of my ECU's are good, so we can try one of them.

It's worth a shot, you know?

I'm going to canabalize a radio to make the connector tonight or soon. Maybe that will help give a better picture of the problem.

Phil was saying that any or almost any radio has a connector on the back that will work for the tool. Is this correct? Will a stock radio connector work? Sorry about the double post, in a hurry.

Scott, you've got all of the tools to do it. Printer cable, wire cutters, and a multi-meter. Make it like mine, wrap it in electrical tape and it'll be gold.

I still can't find the wiring harness part that plugs into the car. I have a couple friends poking around for old dead stereos.

An old BC/BF or Justy stereo will have the connector you need, but I would expect most stores that sell and/or install car audio stuff would carry 'em.

You can also just poke wires into the yellow connector, too. You only need to connect to two of the contacts (receive and transmit); the third is just ground which you can get anywhere on the car.

Not to be redundant but what you're saying is that they're not universal and only Subaru BC/BF, Justy etc. cars will have the proper mating connector that I need? I just want to be sure.

If it gets to that point I will just clip some alligator clips onto the pins.

Yes. Only BC/BFs and early Justies have stereos with the right connector.

I don't know if alligator clips will do, because the connector's contacts are female. But you can certainly fold the end of a stripped copper wire over and stuff it in.

That's what I did for the first diagnosis.

I used some stereo wire and duck-taped it to the connector and to my laptop.

I got frustrated that I could not drive with this connected, so I made the BAC-Cable-V.5.2

YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I got her fixed!! :D  :D

It was the O2 sensor signal wire! I just went out and cut the wire that we ran Vikash and the car ran normal! I went for about a 10-15 minute drive with no issues. I even did a couple pulls on boost at the end to make sure it was ok. :D The wire must have been shorting or making contact and throwing a weird signal. That or the fact that it wasn't shielded wire or something. I'll probably have to replace the plugs but that's ok.

Anyway's I think I got her licked but we'll see tomorrow when I drive it more. Thnaks for the advice and moral support guys. :D

Awesome!

Does it feel like the O2 sensor is working now? CEL?

Scott, you gotta build the cable man!

NKG V-Power copper plugs are like 20 bucks for 4. I can't remember if you want to go 1 step colder or warmer than stock for that much boost. Vikash will probably chime in.

Hehe, thanks. :)

Phil- I'd want 1 step colder. The O2 sensor definitely isn't working, I cut the signal wire man! Hehe. At the moment full rich feels sooooo good though. ;)

Scott's doing his best to make a cable, he got a plug yesterday but it was the wrong one. The local place wants him to buy the whole stereo to get the plug. They threw out the bad ones. Hopefully soon, I'm going to try and help him find one. There's one on my old deck but I don't want to give that one up because that deck still works good.

Scott and Matt. Go to the junkyard or that shop. Under the dash, on the left side, below the ECU there is a white connector. The female side is the plug you need. You can cut that out of the harness (if they charge you $5.00 for this, I'd be utterly shocked), and use that. As a bonus, it has wires, so it'll be even easier for Scott to solder it all together.

You don't absolutely need to rape the radio. I just did because i was impatient and my stock radio didn't work at all.

ALL BC/BF's have this connector on the left side under the dash. You can't miss it when you are looking for it.

also I dunno about 92-94 but I know for a fact the 90-91 use the same style radio connector for the tail lights. I'm not sure where else they use it.

Yea, same style connector for the tail lights in the 92-94's. it's a bit harder to access than the under-dash one, and the likelihood of the under-dash one being in tact is much higher than the tail light unit.

Awesome, Matt! I'm glad such a simple thing worked. We'll have to fix your oxygen sensor still.

The taillight connectors have the right basic geometry but the housing is slightly different so they won't fit correctly with the Select Monitor port.

Scott, I think I have a connector with wires on it that I can send you. Email me your mailing address. Tomorrow when I have a chance to go visit my car (the coolant tank broke today, yay!) I can get the connector and send it. Consider it reciprocity for the quorn. :)

I'm suprised that your coolant tank broke. It looked like it was in good shape. The plastic was still nice and black, not white-ish in color like the old brittle ones.

I'm glad it was something easy too because I was really starting to stress.

Yeah, I replaced it only about 20,000 miles ago!

Oh well... I'll go visit the car tomorrow and decide what to do. I think I'm gonna buy a WRX tank and try to make it fit somewhere.

Like Phil's erector set tank? Too bad with a wagon I can't do that. There's the side where the ABS would be, but if the AWIC EVER comes in I'll be putting a tank there.

I was thinking I'd try to make it fit kind of in the same place it goes on an EJ20 turbo... I don't know how yet though.
