Illuminated Coin Tray "Mod"

Post by QuickDrive »

:)

I drive around at night a lot, and keep a tonne of change in my "Tray" pocket. of course, I can't see a thing down there, and being canadian, we have 1 and 2$ coins as well as quarters and the like.

So I decided that I would light up the tray.

I had a spare ashtray light from my 92 parts car that I kept hoping I'd find a spot to put it.

I started by removing the panel that the tray is connected to, Drilled/cut a hole about 1" square and epoxied the flush cut ashtray light over the hole.

to power it I spliced into the original ashtray light.

I have yet to see how bright it will be at night, but I'm hoping just enough to tell what coin is what.

Pics later tonight :)

That's an awesome idea! I've had the same problem when going through drivethroughs for a quick burger.

Can't wait to see the pics.

I could use that for the pocket under the ashtray that I use to store CDs. Occasionally I forget which order they're in.

I'm pretty sure my pocket under the ashtray is lit... I'll double check tonight.

it should be lit steve

chuck, why not keep them in the coil holder in the center console, or are they too big for that?

also I saw on certain years they stopped getting the tray, does anyone know when they stopped? I believe 93 was the one i saw without it but what other years?

If it is lit (I thought I remember it being lit) it's too dim to be useful since the CDs eat most of the light. The perfect thing would be a little console map light like my Zs had. The 240 was the best as to turn the lights on, you just hit them - the covers were attached to the switches.

I keep on average 20$ in change in the tray, usually a 5$ or 10$ bill too...

That coin slot hold is a screw holder at the moment, don't remember where the screws came from either.

On a related note, how do you access the bulb that illuminates the pocket below the ashtray?

Was is just the 90-91 that had that "Tray"

My 92 has a hole there, and i never figured out what it was for. Maybe just the slide out thing is missing/

Yup. We post-facelift owners lost out on the tray; they replaced it with a blank-off plate.

And most of us lost out on the tray below the ashtray, too, since the airbag controller goes there.

I've got the tray below the ashtray in my 92 (yay no airbags!), and stole the coin tray outta my 91 when it got wrecked. The colour doesn't match, but its outta the way enough that even I don't notice anymore.
