Purge solenoid relocation!

Post by DeusExMachina »

The only CEL I had on my '91 Legacy Turbo was for the stupid purge solenoid. So while the engine's out, I was going to replace it.

Even with the engine out, it was a huge pain to get to. Two extensions and a U-joint later, I got the nut off. It was even more of a pain to disconnect the harness. Finally, after cutting the old harness and pulling the pieces out, it was free. But how the heck would I ever get it back in there?

I present to you my first contribution to this forum. :) How to relocate the canister purge solenoid from the hot, vibration ridden spot to a spot with easier access.

The old spot for the purge solenoid, passenger side between the intake runners

The new spot, above the rearmost spark plug on the left side, attached to one of the spots where the power steering lines mount to. The hose coming off the solenoid is from the stock position, it is too short but I'm going to buy more line tomorrow and run it to the top of the throttle body

This is the line that leads to the other nipple on the solenoid in the above picture. I'm going to run soft line directly from the charcoal canister to this nipple. I'm pretty sure that this line is isolated, and will be fine if left open, just take up minor space.

This is a closeup of the harness from the solenoid. I pulled it over to here and connected the new connector from the solenoid in.

I care, I still have a brand new one of those sitting on my desk. In face I'm looking at it right now. I haven't gotten up the nerve to tackle that little project. Every time I try I go "my car runs fine except for the light, and I have a few months before i need to smog it."

Looks like you've done a good job. I may end up doing that, we'll see.

Ryan - Just cut the harness, extend the wires and mount the new solenoid where he mentioned.

Leave the old one in it's stock place unless you REALLY feel like getting it out.

You don't even need to cut the harness and extend it. The harness originates closer to where I mounted it.

So, you can cut the harness on the old solenoid's side, pull the harness between the intake manifold and the turbo (if you got a turbo), pull off the cut connector, pull the vac hose that leads to the top of the throttle body from the solenoid, and buy some more vac line to run to the new solenoid location.

I also bought an in-line connector and extra vac line so I can connect it to the line from the charcoal canister to the "in" nipple on the solenoid. Look at the original solenoid's orientation to see which line goes where.

pretty close to where I put mine! I used one of the manifold bolts though, slightly closer to the front of the engine. The only thing needed was some longer vacuum hose.

Same with mine, just longer hose. I put it there because I wasn't sure of attaching it to a bolt in the manifold. :)
