Timing Belt R/R Procedure

Post by Austin »

Anyone have a procedure for replacing the timing belt on a 91 ej22t?

This is my first time replacing a timing belt...

I just found out something really cool...

Whoever last did replace the timing belt didn't exactly know what they were doing either. The hydraulic cylinder for the auto tensioner pulley was still pinned shut. Like they compressed it in a vise to get it into place, pinned it (with a pop rivet pin), then forgot to remove the pin...

Great...

I also found out that cylinders #2 & #4 crankshaft has jumped two teeth.

#1/3 camshaft pulley and the crankshaft both line up with their respective timing marks, but #2/4 camshaft pulley is advanced by two teeth.

Great...

On the bright side, should make more power when I get it back together...

So far I need a new timing belt - old one looks great, but I'll replace it anyway just so I know how old it is - I need two new belt idler pulleys...

I also need to replace the front main seal. How do you do that?

I have eight scans from the factory manuals on the timing belt.

If you want me to email them to you, I can.

I found this pdf somewhere - I cannot remember where, but I grabbed it then, and kept it for future reference.

Sorry if it belongs to someone, let me know and I will give appropriate credit.

Anyway - here it is - seems quite thorough!

totech - thanks for the pdf!

What a guide to use as to whether or not I need to replace any/all of the belt idler pulleys? The two smooth idler pulleys have pretty raspy bearing noise, and won't spin for long... but the toothed idler pulley seems to be in awesome shape.

Austin, check my thread out, I did this a little while ago...

Two teeth off??? The engine must have run terrible!!

If idler pulleys have raspy bearing noise then replace them. Mine spun freely and silently...

Thanks for the thread subyluvr2212 -

What does the surface of the front oil seal look like once you get the crank toothed gear off? I have a bearing puller at home...

Assuming you have the original oil seal, it is a black rubber o-ring seal that fits around the crank, right into the oil pump (the new updated ones are brown). I managed to get mine out with a flathead screwdriver, but whatever method you use, be very careful not to damage the oil pump or seal seating surface, and put a little oil on your new seal to help install it, I just took a bolt thin enough to gently hammer the new seal in with...
