mmm weld slag...

Post by Legacy777 »

Got these pics this morning from one of our compressor station guys. This is off of the auxillary generator at our el campo, tx compressor station.

The intake compressor is toast. Weld slag in the intake pipe is the only thing we can think of that caused it. The unit has less then 300 hours on it too. But it would explain why it wasn't passing emissions.

Wow, that's a chewed-up compressor wheel!

So you think pieces of slag and weld came off on the inside of the intake pipe and caused that? I guess if it failed at such a young age that sounds plausible.

It was failing emissions because of insufficient boost?

Those are cool pictures of the generator, though.

We don't see what else could have caused it other then weld slag. I'm sure they'll investigate into it more.

The engine is a natural gas engine, it's a lean burn engine, so what our engines use air for is slightly different then what your car setup does. They lean the a/f ratios out with boost from the turbo. Typically if you have an engine that can't make enough air, it will fail emissions.

Not sure what it'll cost to replace. I'm sure I'll find out though.....I'll let ya know.

Oh, I had figured it was burning diesel and it was starting to smoke without enough boost.

Where does it get its intake air? There's no chance any debris could get into the airstream from outside?

The big intake tube goes outside and is connected to a set of filters, so no I doubt anything would have made it in there.
