Crankshaft Pulley bolt torque

Post by Slick1100 »

When did the update to the crankshaft pulley bolt torque for the 2.2 come out? The reason I ask is that my mechanic admits that he still torques the bolt to 85 lb-ft. He did the timing belt on my car a couple years ago, and the pulley chewed on the crank since then and now I'm getting a new motor. If the updated spec came out before the belt was changed, then I'm going to try to make the shop munch the cost of the motor.

I don't know when the "official" update came out.....or if there WAS even an "official" update.

Talk to the local subaru dealer. They should be able to give you some info.

Okay guys, you have all officially scared the hell out of me with these harrowing tales of crank pulleys falling off and chewing up cranks. My pulley did not wobble one bit, but I tightened up my bolt as much as my scrawny little ass could today anyway. My torque wrench won't fit in that general area, so I just grabbed my socket wrench and put a pipe extension on it, propped my feet against the tire and pulled back as hard as I could. It was on there pretty good to begin with, but I did manage to get it to budge a little tighter.

Like I said it has not wobbled once, but do you think I tightened it enough if I put that much force into it???

Pulley torque

Post by chaz66 »

I agree with Josh...you don't want to break it....however...I used a cheater bar and REALLY cranked it down (say around 140ftlbs...guessing)
Better tight and secure than loose. I have no idea why the factory torque from my Chilton manual is so low..... :?

Post by Rbees »

Well so far i took my subie into the tranny shop and had it repaired i completely pulled every gear and burned them into submission oh by the way its an automatic

but when they were finished they told me that my harmonic balancer is messed up and it needs replace ASAP! well they told me they only do transmission work and couldnt fix it... so i started my car and drove it a bit and the tranny does great all the torch in the world but i popped the hood to look under it to see what they had done and thier work was great but what they called a harmonic balancer was wabling and wiggling around like crazy ,, well i dont know but i went to the parts store to get a harmonic balancer for it... that doesnt exist and he told me that there wasnt such thing and that would would have to find one in a salvage that was cool and all but , well the problem i'm having is what is the crankshaft pulley and is it the one i'm having problems with ,, its the one on the bottom of the engine the center bottom most pulley????
also do u think its loose or messed up i really could use some help on this before i take it somewhere and it messes up on me while i'm driving or something sorry for the long post but i thought u should know the whole story before evaluating my situation thanks peoples!!!

This is the crankshaft pulley. It also acts as a harmonic damper.

You most likely need to replace this, or at the very least tighten down the bolt in the center. DO NOT drive your car until it is fixed, or you may need a new crankshaft/engine.

Great

Post by Rbees »

So i had my mechanic take it off he's a buddy of mine so he takes the belts off and the crankshaft pulley and we look at it and there is a groove taken out of it a pretty good chunk so thats what was causing it to wobble so i'm lookin around town for one to pop on my car for a replacement and 1 salvage yard has it and 1 dealer in town has it. the dealers cost is 106.?? something and the pull a part cost is 20.00 so i'm out tomorrow to see if i can pull it and if I cant I'll be lookin again... If anyone knows somewhere i can get one within a day or two then that would be great! but i dont want it unless its around 40 bucks or so thats as much i'll pay for one well i'll post some pics later of my pulley so we'll have it for reference for someone else.

Ciper,

Do they have the center console stuff?

Have you replaced yours yet? Can I get just the hinges off, or do I need the whole box assembly?

Thanks

You need the inner box portion, the hinges are are attached with rivets. This can be removed from the center console with 6 screws.

I grabbed an extra one if you want, you have the magnet holder right? (instead of the clip).

One problem. The one that I have extra is painted blue

Yeah I have the magnet holder, the one that flips up to the side, rather then to the back.

Is the entire inside painted blue, hinges and everything?

The entire inside of vehicle was painted. Every single surface that wasnt cloth was painted.

Maybe I could drill the rivets out and you attach it to yours with nut/bolts?
