Ya’know... I had the same problem with mine and I can’t remember if I removed the key or not. What I do remember is this; I wound up spraying it down with WD-40, cleaning the visible part of the shaft as well as possible, with scotchbrite, and using two pry bars to carefully work it off a little bit at a time.

Hope this helps.

You can remove the sproket without taking the key off. I used a gear puller to do this when my key became partially grounded up when the pulley came loose. Yep, I was a victim of the dreaded loose pulley.

You can use two flat head screwdrivers to equally distribute the force and gently pry it off. Mine came off by hand. Try wiggling it back and forth a little bit.

Have you been able to remove the bolt yet? If so, rubber mallet, tap gently on opposing sides..
