Whats the deal with my tranny?

Post by dzx »

So its 7:30am and im driving home after work to get ready for school. Sitting at the light i decide to mess with third gear to see if i can get it to work, so i push it into fourth and then third and i can tell its not in so i just leave it alone. The light turns green and i cant get the thing into first. it wont move from the neutral position into first, its like there is no place for first gear. The late middle age guy behind me is shaking his head cause he thinks i killed it and by now im getting pissed off. What the fuck is he shaking his head at? He's driving a cavalier. I finally manage to slip it into second to kill it hopefully resetting whatever i did to the position of gears in the tranny then restart it and it goes right into first. When I talked to a subaru performance shop in denver yesterday he recommended that i put atf fluid in it and run it for about 2000 miles to clean out any sludge or dirt. Anybody have an idea what could be wrong with my 5spd? I'm pretty sure its not my synchros because I had bad synchros on my '90 legacy and it would grind going into gear. This transmission is like there are no gears there or likes its trying to shift against a rubber band if that makes sense, there is no grinding. I was able to get my 90 legacy in gear easily with the bad synchros by "rev matching" as you call it, but this one 3rd and 4th just gear never engage and if i mess with it, its hard to get the other gears to work.

Matt Monson lives in your neck of the woods -I'm sure he'd be willing to look at it if nothing else -assuming, of course, he's available, not working, etc, etc...
Send him a PM, maybe you guys can talk about it?
Besides, it alway's cool to get together with another Legacycentral board member to shoot the breeze with :)

Take the boot off of the shifter, and check the linkage between your shifter and the tranny, it might be loose, or something might not be connected. That's only a guess, but I'm not sure, it's worth checking out.

That same thing happened to me tonight in my buddys 92 Eclipse 2.0 Turbo AWD. I was shifting from 3rd, and it just came loose, it scared me to death, because I thought I broke something in his transmission. But it turned out that the bottom link bolt had come loose. So I put her back on, tightend her up, and rode her all the way home. :-D
