Transmission removal hangup...

Post by x340psi »

I have recently engaged in removing the transmission to install a new clutch on my 91 Turbo Legacy, however I can only get the trans to seperate ~1/2" from the engine. All four bolts holding the trans to the engine removed, as well as the "pitch brace", probably not the correct name, the trans is completely loose from the engine, the crossmember is also off, the shift linkage is detached from the trans as is the slave cylinder for the clutch, axle half-shafts and rear driveshaft off too. Could the input shaft be hanging up on one of the clutch components, pp, disk, throughout bearing? The next thing I will try is jacking the front of the car much higher than the rear. I do not have access to a lift, thus am working on the ground with jackstands. I can not afford, and would rather not have a mechanic do the work, as I have replaced many clutches in various cars. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Turbo trannies have a push type clutch -

The clutch release fork is inserted into tabs intregral with the throwout bearing. To get the clutch release fork out of those tabs, you need to remove a 10mm allen head plug on the driver's side of the tranny.

Then thread in a 6mm bolt into the clutch release fork shaft and pull the shaft out.

Now you'll be able to pull the fork up and out of the t/o bearing , and pull the tranny back.

Thanks Austin!! I figured something was being held up. I have never been able to find a diagram on how the clutch system works, I was waiting to tear it apart to find out how it operates and how to put it back together.
