It Lives,marginally...

Post by dirty kru »

Well i have good news about my battle plauged subaru legacy.
Some of you may remember a few weeks after my purchase of this car it had a tangle with a rubbish truck(still have not recieved ANY compensation). Well aside from still being dinged all down the drivers side progress is going well.
Last weekend my new brake rotors and suspension arm arrived so i set to work swapping them over. It was all pretty easy apart from one of the 19mm bolts on the suspension arm requiring a 1m extension to the ratchet .
So now its drivable at least although driving it has only revealed more things to do :( the carburettor is overchoking when cold, if anyone has any idea on how to fix this it would be appreciated. When accelerating cold it seems to falter on splutter on itself.
Tommorrow I'll do it again and pull a plug to see if its flooding or not.

Things to do

Photos for you guys
New exhaust system
Front Right CV
New FR door,BR door, Wheel arch
Carburettor Rebuild ?
SHOCKS oh god does it need shocks I'll try get a vid of it its ridiculous how much this car bounces

So yeh thats where its at. :D

Although your carb may need rebuilt, I would suspect that it really just needs adjusted. That or just the choke needs lubed up or something. Maybe the choke is sticking. It may be gunked up or something. Just an idea...

apparently it is the rarest legacy in the world :) being an import to here (New Zealand) from South Africa where it was produced.
Ahh every day i thank whoever allowed New Zealand to get SO many early gen Subarus.Seriously maybe every 5-10 cars there will be a subaru of some kind. One area i know we have missed out on though is the SVX,?! i only heard of them a few weeks ago and im a mechanic !!

as for the beast... ive tried a few ways to unblock the carb including two different brands carbie cleaner and the old "hand over carbie at 5k" trick with no luck. I am 100% positive that the carburettor is set correctly and have double checked to be sure.

Does anyone here have any ideas as to suitable exhaust sizes for this engine ?
The last owner installed a 2.5" catless straight pipe from the collectors. Im sure this cant be good for performance. Sounds cool though il record myself engine braking down my hill and you guys can decide how much my neighbours hate me :).

And lastly if anyone knows where peak power for this car is supposed to be made it would help. At the moment its round 5500 -6000+ which is to my belief on/above redline (no stock tachometer installed !!!!)

Thanks for your help, this is ny first subaru and i can honestly say that as long as this forum is around it will not be my last...
i already have plans beginning to form around a GT wagon with a ej22t :) ... but thats next year

2.5" is pretty big for a carbed EJ18. They just don't flow enough. I'd say 2.25 would be about the biggest you'd want to go.

Peak power is probably at around 5500 for HP. There should be a rev-limiter, isn't there?
