winter tires
Well being in new england we get a lot of snow in the winter season. My baby had a brand new set of crappy cooper cobras on her when I found her. These tires have less than a few thousand miles on them. they are brand new looking. I was wondering if snow tires would be better than the cobras and if going with thinner wheels would benifit also like they do on the wrc

Yes and yes.
If you can afford them, get a set of Nokian snow tires. They are expensive as all getout (around 180 each), but I hear they grip like a monkey on crack. Go maybe 10mm narrower than your stock tires, and you should be solid.
You could also get studded snow tires. This is the route I want to go under the advisment of Matt, and how he speaks volumes about his snow tires. From what he says, the things are GREAT

Hehehe ya, I run studded Goodyear Ultra-Grips on all 4 corners in winter and they are nothing short of amazing. They have a super aggressive tread pattern though. They aren't an all season tire or have any performance attributes. They are a pure snow and ice tire. I can drive almost as aggressive on snow and ice as I can on dry roads with them though, they're unreal. They make my car feel like a tank.BAC5.2 wrote:

definately have to vote for the nokian, i've been running the "nokian haakapelita 1's" for a few winters and they are amazing.... they are designed for deep snow mainly but they were able to stop my car on icey roads that i wasn't able to walk on. The haaka 1's are discontinued now (old stock may still be around) but there are haaka 2's, 4's, and the rsi available which are more ice oriented.
I've also driven on toyo observe G-02's and find them to be good
Also, i'm running a 185 width tire on a 15"x6" rim, the 10mm difference in width really makes a large difference

OK, well I've gone a slightly different route. I was in desperate need of a new wheel. I have a really badly bent wheel and the car shakes like a mo-fo at like 40 mph. so I tried to find a replacement 94 turbo wheel and got no where. Just an FYI, the 5 spoke 94 wheel only came on the 94 turbo, it was not used on any other subaru any other year. So, I looked into just getting 4 steel wheels and having my new coopers mounted to the steel wheels. Well, I got a price of $419.00 for the wheels and mouning and balancing. I was like "um...no" I went by the dealer today because when I spoke to the guy yesterday he told me they had some upgraded wheels they had ordered in 1998 or something but they never used. He said because I've bought so much crap from him he'd give me a killer deal. Well, I went by today to look at them and I must say they were pretty nice but they were 15" and I really just need some crappy winter wheels, so at the same time he was making some calls to try to locate just one 94 turbo wheel for me. He finds one in Ohio so I told him to get it for me. Now I plan on restoring my 94 wheels during the winter and either throwing them on in the summer or selling them and getting some 17" ones. I asked him if they had ant Forester steel wheels because I knew they would fit. He just so happened to have 4 sitting behind the counter that had been taken off a used car but were totally mint. He told me $100 bucks for all four. I jumped on that pretty quick. So I have my winter steel wheels and I'm getting my tired put on them tomorrow morning. Hopefully my vibration goes away and it was the wheels and not an alignment problem. Well he also did a VIN backround thing on my car when I was there. He printed out a whole history of my car like when it was purchased, all the options, which dealer sold it, the first owner, engine code, things like that, I'll get it scanned and on here soon. It was pretty cool. Well wish me luck! I'll get some pics up soon
