Turbo engine won't run!
Ok this is the other rally Legacy.
The turbo engine lost oil on the Rim of the world rally and seized up.
A local Subaru guy put in a used engine from Japan(Ok I know they are all from Japan, but this is a USA model) he had to change the intake etc from the old engine as they were not the same.
Anyway all went well and the car was driven on the road for about a week. The car was given a test off road at rally speeds and after about 30mins started to lose power and died.It would turn over and start but under load would not pull.It seemed to be better when cold.
The was towed back to the Subaru guy and another cam sesor was replaced. The engine seems to run better and did some more road miles.
On the next rally all seemed well until the same problem appeared again and the engine died mid stage. We went back after the rally changed the cam sensor but no result.
This is what was been changed,Crank/cam sensor, cold start valve,ECU,fuel pump, injectors, spark plugs/leads and wiring checked. One thing we did find is the earth cable from the battery to the engine was not conected.Checked the code light tell us everything is faulty! and also when removing the injectors there did not seem to be much fuel pressure.
Any clues? as Rob will soon burn the car!
1991 2.2 Turbo with what appears to be a 2.2 turbo with 2.5 heads?
Cheers
Chris

I’ve had problems in the past with clogged catalytic converter. This was not on a Subaru but the description you gave sound very similar.
Also maybe you should check your fuel filter.

Are you getting spark and fuel?
If you're into just swapping parts, you might try swapping the ignitor, coil pack, and the coolant temperature sensor... any of those could cause this kind of difficulty.

Re: Turbo engine won't run!
Are you sure it isn't an EJ20G? Does it actually say EJ22 on the deck behind the alternator? Most of those import engines are old '89-93 Legacy turbo blocks. It could also be an EJ20H which was the replacement for it in '94. But either way it would be a DOHC engine. Did it have coil on plug ignition to start with? Can you post some pics? I know this is a little OT, but can you humour me? Part of the problem may be running the bigger injectors of the EJ20 on your EJ22T ECU.rally370 wrote: 1991 2.2 Turbo with what appears to be a 2.2 turbo with 2.5 heads?
Your fuel mixture may be a bit screwed up as a result and could be part of your problem with driveability?
The other issue could be the ignition as VRG mentioned. Did you have to convert it to wasted spark? Or are you running the coil on plug. You could have a bad coil on one cylinder. Those old coil on plug ignitions are notorious for the coils cracking on them...

PROBLEM SOLVED! Off I went yesterday with a car full of tools to sort out this problem.
Anyway first checked the spark, nothing. Then checked the input plug to the ignitor for power, nothing.Worked back a long the engine loom to the first plug on the inner fender below washer bottle.Went to pull it apart to check it and it came away in my hand! It was a very loose fit so I pushed it in and tried to start the engine, cough cough and it fired up like a good 'un!
I ran a tie wrap around the plugs to hold them together.JOB DONE!
One thing I noticed was the engine markings.were 22jt is there was 111t and on the heads was 25 at the top front.
Cheers
