This isn't everything either, I picked up quite a few brochures when I test-drove the Outback...

Don't forget that insanely small and useless pillow, too! ;)

Guess it would make a nice pillow for resting your feet on when you put them up a table or desk, though.

Hehe... I don't have very much Subaru stuff. I used to have a copy of the ad for the XT6 on my wall -- the one that's titled "The kind of car Mercedes-Benz might have built if they had been a little more creative and a little more frugal" but I lost it.

Hey, are those the complete XT factory service manuals? Do they have a section where they talk about how the brake booster works? I wonder if the XT had a booster like the single-stage one for Legacies/Imprezas...

D'oh. Vikash, you reminded me, I forgot to add the magazine page of the "father/son" XT ad ("Son, I thought you were going to buy a Subaru." "But Dad, I did!" )

Yep, complete 88 XT FSM's. I looked in the specifications for the brake booster, and they both were "vacuum suspended" type, obviously :P, but the XT6 was "vacuum suspended (tandem)". I'm not sure what that means, I'm no brake booster expert. I have diagrams of both boosters too, but I don't have a scanner, I'm afraid :? Maybe I should read up a bit

Oh yeah, I had that father/son ad too!

Huh. So it's possible the XT had a single stage booster and the XT6 had the tandem stage booster?

If you have some time it'd be really cool if you could read up on the functional differences between the two boosters... I'll see if I can scan the relevant Legacy booster documentation for you to compare it to.

I have sections 3 and 4 of the Legacy FSM's, I really need the rest of them, I'll probably get those this month.

I will say this Vikash, my 4cyl XT brakes a HELL of a lot better than my Legacy, even with old pads and rotors and a system that's still not bled properly. That could be weight-related, but I dunno.

A lot of it, I think, is indeed the weight.

Are you just comparing them in normal braking, or have you evaluated how well they resist fade as well?

Just normal braking, I've never pushed the XT hard enough to get the brakes to fade. The Legacy faded really bad on the Dragon, but that's coz I was using el cheapo Albany pads...

But in normal braking, it feels like the brakes have to do less work to bring the car to a stop on the XT. I wish I could bring actual calculations to the discussion, but I only have subjective evidence. :?

1992 wagon, wifes daily, high compression

Oh, the subjective feel could be lots of things... Different amounts of power assist, different mechanical advantage, different weight... if it has a single stage booster that's probably some of it too.

Actually Vikash, I looked pretty thoroughly at the brake booster diagrams in my Legacy FSM's last night. Turns out the Legacy one shows how the booster works under a number of different conditions, from slight to full pedal range. The XT's doesn't :? With the pictures and everything, I saw how a tandem booster works. That said, yes I can assuredly say that the XT is a single stage booster :)

Oh, hm. Oh well; I guess we continue to search for an early Impreza FSM.

The part -- I think -- that's very different between the single stage and double stage boosters is the "under medium load" part. The tandem booster apparently tries to make it so it takes almost no effort to maintain moderate brake pressure after you've achieved it, completely violating the springlike behavior that you might expect.

An update on this, it's gotten serious...

I have the full-line brochures of these years, they appear in this order from top left:
Image
79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 87, 88, 89, 91, 92, 95, 97, 98, 99, 01, 02, and 05.

I also have these model-specific brochures appearing in the same order:
Image
90 Legacy (and supplement), 91 XT, 94 Legacy, 01 Legacy, 02 Impreza, 02 WRX, 02 Legacy, 03 Baja, 04 Legacy, 04 Impreza, 04 Outback, 04 Forester (and XT supplement), 04 STi, and 05 Legacy (and supplement).

I'm not stopping there either.

Any challengers?
