Hi all,
I did an ECU test today which reveled a failing knock sensor#22 code. I sort of know what the knock sensor does, but not fully. I also do not know where it is located on the engine and if it is an expensive part or not. Funny thing is, the car has never run better, (but the exhaust is smelling a bit toxic!) Maybe I should just leave it alone? Maybe I can find a used one?
Any input would be helpful,
Dean

Oh yeah.... my KYBs came in the mail today. Can't wait to install em.

Replace. Under $50. It's like a little microphone on the block that hears preignition. When it detects it (or thinks it does), the ECU cuts timing ... or it's supposed to. I don't believe in coincidences and my knock sensor was bad when my exhaust valve melted.
Anyway, it's on the back of the engine to the middle on the driver's side. It looks like a small black cylinder with a bolt through the top (either 10 or 12 mm) and a wire going to the connectors at the engine/transmission (along with the plugs for the cam and crank sensors). It can be replaced with a socket and an extension in a couple minutes.

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
you can find pics of the knock sensor in here dean.

Welcome, Dean.
Also, Subaru has redesigned the knock sensor since our cars were sold. The original design is somewhat prone to intermittent failure (tiny cracks appear in the wire from what I understand), so it makes good sense to swap in the redesigned one if you can find the money.
The Subaru part number for the new one is 22060AA031.
