If you have the time, money, patience, and money, it's possible.

The question is whether or not a 91 Legacy L FWD with a plain-jane EJ22 would be worth dumping almost 8 grand on to convert.

What are your goals with the engine. You say you wanted a turbo setup, and now DOHC. If you are questing for high hp, you didn't pick the best engine platform.

There isn't a DOHC EJ22 that I've ever seen (well, except for the 22B, but you'd NEVER find those heads), so you'd have to adapt EJ25 heads. Then you'd have to run standalone engine management, since the stock ECU has NO idea what's going on since it's only programmed to know what's going on with one cam.

It would be MUCH easier and cheaper to swap an EJ22T into the car than to deal with the pain of doing a DOHC swap.

$8k isn't for the heads. It's for everything you need to get the heads to work. Morgie spent just over 6k to convert his EJ22T to a DOHC motor, and he got a DEAL on everything.

If you really want to to do it, you definately could. I think it's a bigger project than you are expecting, and on an N/A EJ22, you've gotta ask if it's REALLY worth it (in terms of block durability).

well i deffinitly know its not a walk in the park (not trying to be a smart ass) just looking to invest into my baby and take my time but from what u guys r tellin me i would think it would be best to buy a hole other engine tear it down and rebuild up like i want and just keep my engine i got in there now on the back burner cuz there is nothing wrong with the engine now its clean as hell and i try to keep it up plus i like to do all the work to it myself cuz down south some ppl dont really have a clue about subarus inless there acually certified so ok we nixxed that idea so is there a engine that allredy has DOHC that would fit into my bay?

phase II ej25s are SOHC. I'm not sure what your second question is, but there are N/A versions of both EJ20s and 25s as well as turbos, though only the new cars have factory 2.5 turbos.

no you didnt, and no you cant

for the first part there's no such thing as an EJ20DETT I assume you've looked on ebay and found an auction that says that. That's just the seller not knowing that DETT isn't a naming scheme for all engines.

second part the second turbo runs right into your brake master cyl, it's setup for rhd cars so ti'd work i that situation. This raises a question i've been wondering, where is "savannah"

the jdm N/A EJ20 is a DOHC non turbo 2.0 liter motor.

the USDM phase I EJ25 is a 2.5 liter DOHC non turbo found in older legacy gts and outbacks and the older RS. this motor is not as strong as the phase II N/A SOHC ej25 found in the newer cars. the phase I had problems w/piston slap and the headgasket. the phase II is a better 2.5 liter in my opinion. output is around 165 HP and torque. both peak around 4,000rpm.

for some reason a N/A SOHC subaru motor makes a little more power than the DOHC ones. less parsitic loss or something like that thanks to a less complex valvetrain.

Indeed. "DE" is a Nissan term. SR20DET, RB26DETT, etc. DE denotes DOHC.

The EJ20TT is a DOHC motor, but I wouldn't buy from a seller who doesn't know how to properly code the engine he is selling. Espically if he's an actual importer and not just some guy trying to sell his engine.

I HAVE heard that the EJ20TT heads flow differently than the EJ20T heads. But that was on the internet, so take it for what it's worth.

And please, can you at least TRY to use proper grammar in your posts? At least just use SOME punctuation.

Only one comment to add to this tread. If you put EJ25 DOHC (or EJ25 SOHC or EJ20 DOHC) heads onto an EJ22 NA engine you will habe a CR in the mid 8's. This would work if you were gonna do a moderately boosted turbo set up, but wouldn't be worth a damn on an NA car. As has been suggested, swapping in a complete NA engine is a better route for a non-boosted engine swap...

i once emailed that georgia ej20dett guy and said id never heard of that engine code and perhaps he was mistaken. He had the most amazingly insulting response, something about idiot kids telling a professional importer about engine nomenclature. I wish i still had our correspondences. In short, that guy is an asshat and i wouldnt want to talk to him again, let alone do business.

Good catch Hardy! My bad, lol.

The EJ20DETT thing is an EJ20TT with improper nomenclature. I would stay away from it though, as someone who's worth a spit that would be in posession of that engine, would sure as hell know it's code.

There are a LOT of easier ways of getting power.
