missing and sputtering legacy, help!!

Post by umstone »

any suggestions welcome. 93 legacy 2.2 auto. sat for 3 months, i bought it and it idles and runs very bad until it reaches normal operating temp ( about 5 mins of driving ). if i only give it a small amount of gas it does ok, but try to accelerate normally and it misses very bad until about 3500 rpm ( get up to twenty mph and drop it to first gear). i just replaced coil, plugs and wires. and water temp sensor. any ideas?

so replacing the coolant temp sensor didn't help?

If it sat for three months, I bet the gas was toast and all gummed up. Run a can of seafoam in the tank and you might want to do the intake system as well.

i have ran a couple bottles of injector cleaner through it. but i have been driving it all summer. it runs good once it is warmed up. could the injectors need replaced. i pulled them offl last night and cleaned them with carb cleaner and they look nice n clean. This car has me baffled, i am thinking it need a computer. ?

sure sounds like the temp sensor, but you just replaced it. I would unplug the sensor while it is running badly when cold, and see if it makes a difference. Perhaps the signal from the temp sensor is not making it to the ecu ? Then move on and check signals from the other sensors (throttle position, MAF in particular). Maybe one of these is bad and sends bad info when cold, then works OK when warm. That is backwards of the usual situation but you never know.

thanks, i did unplug the water temp sensor and the cooling fan kicked on but the car still ran bad. is there more than one temp sensor on this car. i know my bmw has 2 or 3. could the o2 sensor cause this type of problem?
