Code 51

Post by rb92leg »

Hi,

I just bought a '92 Legacy and have begun pulling codes, one of which is 51. If I understand the CEL code correctly, this is an inhibitor switch fault for an A/T.
Anyone have any ideas as to where to begin to trace this fault? Frankly, I don't even know how best to get to the switch at the source, let alone trace it from the loom.
The car has no apparent problems during ignition, and performs start-up operations only while in "Park" (assuming that the primary role this functionality provides is one of failsafe). But I just want to be certain I'm not missing a potentially bigger problem!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions:-)

I do believe that's all its supposed to do, Just prevent you froms tarting in anything but park or neutral. If you're saying it wont start in neutal, maybe that's why it's throwing a code?

I omitted to say that it does indeed start in Neutral also.
Sorry.

FYI; sorted! Pulled shift cover; located switch; pulled & blew it out @ 30psi; light moly.; reset ECU. No more code!
