pondering tranny swap...

Post by IggDawg »

one of these days I may feel the urge to go stick. wehter my tranny dies of torque bind or just old age, it'll happen sooner or later. 300-500 bucks on a new (used) tranny will be cheaper than servicing the old one. another possibility is that my baby's body will most likely go before the engine. I'll be rallying her at some point. when the body goes I'll be putting the engine into an Impreza.

teh question is: how long will a non-WRX impreza stick shift hold up against EJ22t torque? at that point I expect to be putting out over 200 lbft. will the tranny go glassbox on me? Assuming I need something stronger, is the legacy turbo tranny THAT much stronger?

Subaru uses a completely different type of clutch on all turbo models. The pull-type hydraulic clutch, which can transmit a whole lot more force... whether the tranny is different to handle the extra torque I don't know.

This seems to be up to the driver, I have heard of guys that can't keep the teeth on the gears of several turbo trannys, mile hi has a Impreza n/a tranny and no problems. So in the end I don't know, must be the driving style.

The gears etc are actually exactly the same size, the turbo tranny gears are shot peened that is about the only difference apart from the clutch setup as previously mentioned

I've heard of some n/a rs guys blowing their trannies as well. lol! shitty drivers! Like everyone's said, it's drivers error mostly.

So does this mean you're keeping the car, Igg?
