Transmission compatibility

Post by frood »

Hey gang.

I'm preparing to buy a transmission as it is probably inevitable at this point that I will need one sometime in the near future (and I have the cash now.) I want to get a used <70K mile trans, but they're hard to find in the 1990-95 model years that low. I found a 69,900 trans for $500 from my local foreign yard (love these guys, always very helpful) but in their database it is the "6/95 and up" not "5/95 and proir" style. I don't know if it'll be compatible. It seems that all the 4EAT's are more or less the same to me (except the really late ones), but I cannot be sure.

My Car: 1993 Subaru Legacy Auto 4WD
Current trans Code:
TZ102ZA2AA
Donor Trans Code:
TZ102ZABAA

Additionally, they had a 1994 Impreza transmission with 61,100 miles for $350, but the code was:
TZ102ZX3AA

Now, the impreza transmission looks best to me. I mean, how many times do you find an auto with only 61,100 for $350?

Advice would be appreciated!

They should work. I'd go for the impreza trans.

Main thing you need to make sure of is the final gear ratio is the same. Other then that....they should bolt up.

Well, I looked it up on the net and it says that the 1993 Impreza was a 4.11 final drive ratio. On another page it says the current Legacy is a 4.11 final drive too with the 4EAT. So, would I be foolish if I guessed that the 1993 Legacy was also a 4.11 ratio?

Anyone who can comment please do! =)

I have a 1995 impreza transmission in my 1990 legacy. I also have an "ID" decoder for automatic transmissions (if I can find it).

Hey Cipher, if you could find it I'd be very greatful (grateful?).

One more quick question. Lets say that the trans I get has the wrong front diff. Can't I just have my mechanic swap my current front diff onto the 4EAT from the 1993 Impreza?

Thanks a ton,
Chris

Not necisarily depends on the ratio, because one of the ratio boxes have different teeth count on the main shaft and diff.
