Turbo water pumps are different...

Post by Matt Monson »

This may be old news, but I just noticed this last night. There is a nut sealing the outlet port that would be used for the bung for the factory oil cooler. This means that your turbo car could very easily have an OEM or a custom oil cooler added to it! 8) This is off of a '93, don't know how many years this was in effect for. I checked my '93 EJ20G and it's pump does not have this port...

I think also the housing where the thermostat is clocked different. I believe vikash confirmed this a little bit ago.

yes, my NA water pump is clocked differently. I just had never seen a discussion on installing an oil cooler onto one that didn't come with one stock...

Oh, there's a nut sealing that port on 92-94 pumps? Woah.

How do you seal a port with a nut?

Can you take pictures?

I was serious. I thought it might be some kind of weird fitting I wasn't familiar with, and maybe a closed-end nut fit over an externally threaded nipple or something.

I would like to see pictures. You know, I wonder if that's a simple 1/4" BSPT port that you could thread a nipple into!

I'll get the pictures as I have a guy coming over to photograph the internals of the fubar'd EJ257 block (a thread will be posted about that in Misc. ;) )

I think it is as simple as a 1/4" port that you could thread a nipple. I will let you know what comes of this. I am most likely using the pump and cooler off the EJ257 for my RS, but may want to put this Legacy Turbo pump to use on another project in the near future...

You just didnt search hard enough :D: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=14636

but I think what josh was saying was that the actual thermostat housing is different. If you were you hold the housing at the end that connects to the lower rad hose the bolt pattern would be offset 90 degrees. In other words they're the opposite of one another.

But now lemme throw out something that you may or may not have known. There were NA EJ25's with factory Oil cooler. I know this because there's a Phase II EJ25 sitting in the shop with a blown piston and this setup. I know it's oem because it has an NA style water pump. I have yet to figure out which car it's from though :\. Maybe I should stop being lazy and just ask.

I believe the only NAs to get the factory oil coolers were certain Foresters. Like you said, they have the same water pump as the non-oil-cooler-equipped ones; they actually have a different thermostat housing that has an extra nipple going off towards the passenger side of the car.

I'll be damned. Now I dont have to ask. A simple google and some searching on subaruforester.com yeilds a link to scoobymods.com which shows how to do it. Hmm, I've got an oil cooler coming, plus I do need to flush my coolant here soon, maybe I'll put this crap in there :D

Where'd you get the cooler? I would like to add one to my 92, but have no idea where to look.

So,
My buddy tooks some pics. Now I just need to wait for them to get hosted. Something else I was able to assertain is that you can install an oil cooler on most any EJ series block. If you look behind the oil filter, there is a plug that would service the outlet from the cooler if it was removed. I verified this on all the engines in my garage (EJ20G, NA EJ25, STi EJ25, NA EJ22, and Turbo EJ22). pics to come shortly...

You're talking about the freeze plug that you normally use to drain the passenger side half of the block's coolant, right?

Yes, all OEM Subaru oil coolers use that spot as the coolant source; they thread a nipple in place of the plug.

How cheap would you sell it? I'd like to experiment with this extra port and see if I can find an appropriate fitting for it...
