4EAT users get in here..

Post by WRXdan »

How is your 2-3 shift when under part throttle? Mine is mush. My 1-2 is good, 3-4 is good. I always thought it was due to the 4EAT being a turd. Is your 2-3 mush. Mine shifts better when more gas is applied. 2-3 is still too mushy for me.

mushy how? would it feel like a slipping clutch in a 5mt? My shifts are like that, likely because my clutch packs are probably on their way out.
Does your rpm hold at whatever speed you're at, or does it drop when in gear?
Lately, mine's been dropping down to about 1500 rpms, so then i have to get it back up to 3 or 4 grand before it starts speeding up again..
how are you shifting?

mmm not that bad. Our Jeep shifts way musher...There is no delay when accelerating. It's just weird how 1-2 is nice, 2-3 sucks, 3-4 is good. If I manual move the shifter then it shifts fine.

The 2-3 shift is done with the brake band, so its inherent design/setup is going to make it slower/less crisp then the others.

My 2-3 shift was pretty crappy as well.

so would adjusting the brake band be the thing then? I kinda thought about that, but i wasn't sure.. the tranny is really the last thing i wanna mess with... THAT scares me.
Dan: are you talking about shifts when its in D, or literally, 1-2, 2-3, manual-style? I've found that right now, D provides shitloads more torque than shifting manually from 1-2, or 2-3.
Say, while we're here.. there shouldn't be any hesitation in the tranny, right? For instance, if i'm approaching a free-right at a light, where I'm in 2, then i hit it to go around the corner from a stop, should there be some kind of delay, like a spool-up, when i accelerate? I hit the gas, and i go, but the rpms rise and there's no input til a second later. What does that mean?

oh, so you count the gears? I lose count every time.. for some reason my mind wanders when "Dip it low" comes on the radio, and so i MUST sing... and then i forget about counting...

I'll have to feel it today on the ride home, and I'll post my results. STAY FOCUSED! I get off at 1pm PST, so i'll post around 2-3ish..

You can adjust the brake band, however it can be a little difficult to get just right. If the material on the brake band is worn or the shift is slower then normal. You'll want just a slightly tighter brake bend then what's called for, so the release of the brake band and engaging of the next gear is synced just right.

If you have it too tight, the gear shift will be very abrubt, or will not shift at all. Too loose and the shift will be very laggy.

ok, looks like i'll be doing my reading before i touch anything... what happens if the shift is too abrupt, is there a big deal? Will it just be harder on the tranny overall?
I think I'm already experiencing torque bind.. so need to be nicer to my transmission..
