Indeed. . . when looking at springs, however . . . you'll have to go WRX with these things.

FYI: Fitment-wise, springs for 2002+ WRXs should fit these struts. The Tein coilovers on my car are good for 02+ and they're speced-out for use on STis, so I'm assuming the fitment is universal among the Impreza chassis. :)

You need new tops, other than that they will bolt right up.

Brat4by4 has some kooky setup. PM him.

STI Struts

Post by rally370 »

I've purchased a set of STI struts for my Rally Legacy as the GR2's keep bending. The STI rears look long enough, but the fronts are about 1 1/4" short. So I'm worried about the ride height(I have 2 " lift spring) and travel. Is there any rally inserts for these struts?
The present inserts are better than the GR2's just shorter.

Cheers

You'll want to email them to verify whether these kits would work with v7 or v8 STi struts, but they're saying they have applications for Imprezas on the site. Might be worth a look.

The rear springrates are the ones I'd be concerned about. Since they were designed for a sedan, they may allow the ass end of your wagon to sag.

I put on the STI struts with the standard STI impreza springs over the weekend and the ride height is good(Road use) but a little low for my use.
The STI tapered springs were fitted at the rear by filing out the bolt holes (outwards) about 1/4"
The car handles well after a road test.

Ok to start the bump/rebound is much much better than the GR2's and they are inverted inserts so you can change 'em,plus being inverted gives better control.
Ride height is with 15" wheels about 1" between tyre and wheel arch rear and about 1 3/4" front.
They feel pretty stiff (200lbs F 130/200lbs R) but not stiff enough for me so I'm shipping in some King Springs from Austrailia KSFS-22 Front and KSRS-39 rear both being 245lbs .So when they are fitted I'll let you know.

Cheers

I always wonder why people suggest that the rear of a wagon will sag, considering that the new springs are of a higher rate than the wagon's stock rear springs.

Chris, thanks for the review of your STi suspension. What strut mounts did you use?

they are of a higher rate, but they're shorter. They may sag less than stock sedan springs, but they will still sag. There's more involved in ride height than spring rate.

My rs springs are 5 inches shorter than my stock springs.

OK.

I guess it's semantics, but when I read "sag" I visualize more spring compression. Like the spring is unable to support the vehicle. When I read "shorter," I visualize the car sitting lower.

Seems silly to warn someone that their car is going to be lower, when that's the effect they are going for by changing the springs in the first place.

GUY: "hey, I'm going to install these springs to lower my car..."
DUDE: "ok, but watch out, your car is going to be lower."

But rally370 has not indicated what he is trying to achieve by changing suspension, other than he is looking for more reliability over the GR2's. Cheap struts aren't very cheap when you keep bending them, I guess.

Overall, I'm hoping that STi suspension, when installed on BC/BF, will achieve a significantly firmer ride, less body roll, balanced handling, and a refined yet taut feel. All at near stock ride height, or slightly lower (less than 1").

To term an American phrase ,more bang for your buck! I can solve all my problems going the DMS route .But we budget rally guys try anything to get the best for our buck.GR2's were on the car when I purchased it.First rally bent 'em all.Now I've had Billies for years and wedged them without bends.STI struts have inserts so I can wedge them, then I hope no more bent struts??? inserts I hope I can change for better ones?? Springs to me seem soft so I'll change them and see what happens.
In the past I have cut up MK2 Escort front Billies and made them fit all sorts of rally cars.Billies in the US? not too many so I'll try the next best thing STI struts??
Anyway lets see .

Cheers

Yea, exactly. Because the stock spring is 25% stiffer in the rear of the wagon, the sedan spring (even an aftermarket uprated sedan spring) will not be able to hold the rear at the proper ride height, and thus the rear will sag.

Ah, checking the chart of spring rates, I see now how high the rate is on the rear of the wagons. I had not noticed that before.
