Reverse stock intake manifold- can it be done?

Post by Spud-GT »

Image Basically I wanna set mine up like this. I plan on doing a front mount just like this, Image but with a Saab one. Now, can it be done by just bolting it up or will it require more work? Here is another view although this is with this guys non stock manifold Image

sure it just bolts right up... provided you dont have a power steering pump in the way...

Yea, it'll flip around. But you do have a pump and resivoir in the way. You also have to get creative with IAC valve plumbing.

What do you mean a SAAB FMIC? Are you going to use the stock SAAB 900 intercooler as a front mount? HARDLY worth the effort.

That's barely worth the effort if that's what you are thinking about doing...

That first picture looks like the one where instead of reversing the manifold the guy just put a block-off plate where the throttle body used to go and attached a new throttle body flange on the other side.

In both those examples, they kept the power steering pump and moved the alternator to where the A/C compressor used to go. I don't know if that'll work with an actually reversed manifold, but it might.

Phil - I think he means the Saab 9000 front mount. It's a substantial intercooler. A lot like the big Volvo one:

No, not the usual Saab intercooler that everyone uses for a top mount. And the idea of which intercooler to use is still being pushed around.

So where could I move the powersteering to? I dont have ac but the intercooler piping would most likely take up that space. And what about the IAC valve? What would I have to do with that?

If you do the block-off-and-make-new-flange thingie then you can keep the stock IAC valve.

Even if you reverse it you might be able to fit the IAC valve behind the alternator or whatever's in that spot. Then you just have to run a long 3/4" hose to the intake before the compressor.

I think anyone who bothers with the custom work needed to reverse the manifold just switches to aftermarket engine management anyway.

Hmmm, where is the IAC at? Have a pic of the location?

Find the big ass black hose coming off of your pre-turbo resonator. That goes to the IAC.

Yeah, that's the intercooler. :)

I guess the TurboMustangs doesn't like hotlinking. You can look at all the intercoolers here:

Damn, not that big, lol. Do you think it would just be easier to just plumb a front mount the traditional subaru way? Im thinking about going back to a stock WRX turbo but I'll be running a 3 inch turbo back with 0 cats.

What turbo are you running right now?

When I go FMIC, I'm just gonna do it the BLITZ way, not the Greddy way. Turbo -> Drivers side -> Passenger side -> Throttle body.

What is wrong with your car?
For the work it would take to reverse the manifold I don't think it would be worth it. If it was me I'd do it the subaru way.
Don't know much about the IC, I'll check into it and see if it flows well. Big isn't the most important thing.

if your thinking about getting rid of the car its deffinitly not worth the effort to flip the maniflod. another problem you will run into is hood clearence with our manifolds.

the huge-ass saab IC actually comes from a 9000, and although it cools well, it actually resticts flow a bit. My roomie (a saab freak) went with a custom spearco unit which cools almost as well, but freely flows much more air (i.e. less lag). Considering the location of the stock a/c and radiator on the legacy, I don't think the 9000 IC would be a very good choice. Plus, its hard to hide that ugly plumbing that hangs down underneath.

The Volvo intercooler looks a lot like the Saab 9000 intercooler. Look at the pictures on the TurboMustangs site.
