Awful Vibration behind timing belt cover

Post by wind chaser »

Here's a little input for the collective knowledge base. I had driven across the barren scenery from SLC, Utah to Rexburg, Idaho seemingly without incident. When I started it up about an hour later, however, there was a terrible vibration coming from the engine bay, most notably from 1000-2000 RPM. It almost could have been exhaust, yet it had a more of a clatter as if something was hitting plastic. It seemed as if it was coming from just below and behind the idler pulley for the a/c belt. I didn't have tools with me, so I gambled that it would make the trip back. I luckily made it most of the way. It died in my parents driveway. I started it after sitting for a couple of hours-no compression.

When I pulled it apart, I found the timing belt intact-surprise. The problem turned out to be the bolt that holds the tensioner idler pulley had broken off about 3/16" inside the block. Tool purchase excuse-angle drill attachment and a set of bolt extracters. I hoped the bolt remains were loose, because it was vibrating but still working for a time. It came out easily and except for needing to trade an n/a H20 pump for a turbo went together fine.
