legacy of brutality

Post by LedJetta »

i am new to these boards so ill introduce myself and give a somewhat brief history. my first car was a 91 legacy wagon L auto, which was handed down to me from my dad. i drove this car to college for 5 years and when i graduated i got 98 2L jetta. my younger brother had the legacy for a year in high school and once he left for college i took it back...it lived a long, full life. i always maintained it and for a while i took great pirde in its apprearance.

for the last year and a half i have driven the jetta in nice weather and the subaru was reserved for winter/other beater duties. recently it began to finally give me some signs it was going to fail. it was past the point where i could dump any more money into it...i had just replaced all the rotors and pads in august too.

this past weekend i began my search for a beater 95-99 legacy L wagon replacement. the second place i stopped i just about crapped my pants. sitting next to a buick park avenue and an integra was a 1994 legacy touring wagon. 1 owner, all records, 58000 original miles, just hadthe 60k service done. it looks virtually like a brand new car. suffice it to say it wasnt the beater i was looking for but it was my dream car in 1998 so there was no going back.

so i picked it up last night, $5800 after the $100 i got for the 91. silver, power everything. here are some pics of the other steeds i dont have any of the new one yet...

Good work! That's not a bad price for a car that's had that much TLC, and with such low mileage. Welcome!

Whiteline or H&R for Legacy specifics. Or just switch to a WRX or STi suspension setup. Get a strut/spring combo and it will bolt right into your car.

i just got it monday night so i havent had a chance to take any/upload them. i miss the first car for its obvious panache, but the new one is cherry...and i am super impressed how quick it is. but it can always be quicker. :)

i am kind of surprised there havent been more complaints about my vw. you guys are more open here than on vwvortex haha. that car has been my ongoing project the last year and a half...the quest for the most obscene, head-scratching style possible. its got coils, 16x7 and 16x8 porsche phone dials, chip, exhaust, k&n panel, euro spec headlights, strut bars, short shift, plaid golf sports seats (both of my cars now have plaid seats SCORE!)...thats about all i cna think of now, it also sits about 3 in. off the ground and handles like shit, so i need this car to stay as practical as possible for now...but its too nice to beat so maybe ill have to find another true beater hahahaha...

Hardy, reason? I forgot to mention you have to ziptie the brake lines somewhere... :?: It's funny you say that when everytime I look at my Legacy it has the SPT suspension which bolted right in there. Have people been drinking Haterade again?

The top hats are different in the rear, not everyone is attacking you when they say something.

So are you talking about sti or spt suspension?

alright dudes how about one of you tell me where i can find some H&Rs that will fit my car...a consensus would be a sweet little bonus, but not necessary. ;)

and how hard is it to do the suspension on my subernaut? i have done it about 5 times on my vw and it can be done with hand tools...

Subaru suspension rivals the *supposed* easiness of VW suspension. I haven't worked on a VW personally, but my room mate is a nut. When we worked on my car, he kept commenting on how easy it is. You need one flare nut wrench, two sockets, and two wrenches.

There is no confusion. The tophats don't matter if you keep the ones you have in your car. Like I stated before... if you take the springs and matching struts ONLY out of just about any EJ engine car, it will bolt straight into your car.

I have no idea where to find H&R's, sorry.

hahaha *little* vw jab there. honestly the suspension was one of the the easier things i have done on my vw...the brakes are a nightmare, you have to get new bearings pressed when you replace the rotors. on the other hand i did all four rotors and all new pads on my 91 legacy in about 3 hours my first attempt, SUPER EASY...

Naw, I was just saying I haven't done it or seen it personally. As you can attest to, any kind of car nut will understate any problem they have with the vehicle. My VW friend also will talk about how reliable his cars have been, while everyone including girls will secretly roll their eyes (girls = ones that don't even claim to know about cars).

Don't worry, there is a giant thread discussing the ummmm... "merits" of VW's. Search for it :)

I've worked on a lot of VWs and hate them more than any other car, but they're not bad looking. It's mostly the quality that I have issues with. I think VWs are like '80's Jags - 90% were junk, but the rest would be strangely reliable. Either way, whatever you like - I don't have to work on it so it doesn't matter what I think. I'm a guy who almost dropped $17k on a 1935 Morgan Trike and $22k on a Lamborghini Espada, so to each their own.

When you said strut/spring combo I thought you meant the whole setup.

that link wasnt working so i am not sure what you are asking about but the wheels on the car in the other pics are phone dials from a 944 turbo.

and as far as reliability i have not had a single problem with the car thus far. it has been pretty reliable. we also have a 2004 gti 1.8t and a 2003 passat wagon 1.8t and none of them have caused us any hassle.

but i will always be a legacy wagon fanatic. stick around you will see some things done to these cars youve never seen before. ;)
