dude.. that WRX exhuast is a commodity around here. Is it mounted right? Common consensus is that we never sound "ricey", but more of a low burble, when you open up a boxer engine like this..
Any muffler you want will work, and for more power, but quiet tone, you can still remove one cat or so, and either get down to just one cat, or replace it with a hi-flowing one. Either way, you win. You can throw on any kinda muffler you want, from a Flowmaster, to a Rocket-Style, to a widemouth DTM.
Personally, I had a V-Power DTM that was straight ROCKIN'. (2.5" inlet, 3.75" tip)People knew my car by the sound, and boy did it sound rich. All my friends were jealous.
You were originally from the NW, right? I believe I talked with you awhile ago before you left for AZ --you used to work at Aaron's, right?
Good luck on your search.. but I'd say stick with the WRX exhaust. How much of it do you have? Just the muffler, or the whole thing?

ya i worked at aaron's auto wrecking, im now down in AZ for college.
no i dont wanna sell the REX muffler, ive been thinking, mainly the bank account hindering me is more like it, and im just going to have a shop mount the muffler so it is sealed and sits right.
and strait pipe on a n.a 2.2 is too loud at 3200rpm for 40 minutes every day to and from work after school.

Nice to have you back on the boards, Shean..
In fact, I think I'll be calling Aaron's here soon, as I need a new 4EAT..
Straight Pipe wouldn't be too loud after a few weeks/months of it.. you'd either lose some hearing, or get used to it.. just takes time, either way. Besides, performance does have a cost, right?
Good luck.

I would be concerned if i were getting 15mpg on my stock powertrain n/a. I just had a tank that i flogged the piss out of and got 20.6 mpg. There's a ton of threads concerning mileage.
If the car runs funny, there's a pile of possibilities, if it seems fine, i'd check out my o2 sensor first.
A high flow muffler will hurt a little around town, and help a little on the highway.

milage per tang --this gets funnier and funnier! ..and you're a college kid!
Miles PER gallon = Miles DIVIDED by gallons.. so.. if you keep the total of what's in your tank --gallons, then you divide that by how far you've travelled, you'll end up with MPG.. oh, I love it when things come together!
I don't know if many of us calculate MPG.. it's just one of those things most people don't do, unless an electronic does it for them --like in the newer cars. I can tell you that with proper air mods, and some light exhuast work, and decent driving, ie- some coasting-- 310+ miles/tank is very achievable. I know i did it in my FWD 91 sedan with only an airbox mod and a muffler. It can be done!
If you're feeling really hesitant over your mileage, as far as the gauge goes, I would suggest that you check up on your electronics; keep in mind your fuel senders are close to 14 years old --that's old in terms of things that are in a car!
When they get old, the readings get bad, which, in turn, affects you, while you're looking at the gas level on your gauges. Scott is right by saying that there's usually ~3 gallons left when its telling you its on E. That ensures that you'll be getting gas soon, and not running out right then and there, possibly leaving you stranded in the middle of the desert. SOA is nice like that.. kinda cool, huh?
