Can the gear box out of a 4WD be used in a 2WD?

The thing is this. Ihave a 2WD automatic legacy that i would like to convert to manual shift. But knowing that subaru have been makin all their cars AWD from a bout 97 or so its hard to locate a @WD gear box and its recently a few jamaicans started buying these cars. Due that it would be easier to obtain a 4WD gear box. If u have any suggestion please let me know.
