I have a question about a noise that I am getting from my clutch. At least I think that it is the clutch. Most of the time when I let out the clutch I hear a high pitched noise, like a metal to metal clicking. When I depres the clutch only about 1/2" it goes away. I have asked my Mechanic and he was unable to find anything and was not able to replicate the issue. It seems to be happening the most and/or the loudest in the mornings. I am thinking that just an adjustment to the clutch would help, but would that just hurt the clutch further or am I looking at a bigger problem.
Another thing that has started about the same time is the lights on my dash turn on when the car is not turned on, but the ignition is on. I have asked a mechanic what this could be and he said with out a dought it is the alternator. Can this be connected to the above? Luckly i have a lifetime warranty on the alternator .
You think the noise is coming from the clutch just because it goes away when you disengage the clutch? It could easily be coming from the input shaft of the transmission, couldn't it? Maybe you should try changing your gear oil. As a bonus, you can look through the old oil for excessive metal particles and stuff, too. If it seems to happen more in the mornings, that might mean it has to do with your gear box or your gear oil being cold.
About the dash lights -- do you mean all the warning lights come on when the key is in the "Accessory" position? Because they're supposed to come on when the key is in the "On" position if the engine's not running.
I don't understand how anyone could say that those lights coming on is certainly the alternator. Do you trust this mechanic?
I guess that you are right about the noise. It could jsut be the input shaft. If you haven't knoticed I don't know too mutch about engines. I would love to learn more, but I don't have mutch time to spare currently. I hope that it isn't something too bad. But I will check it out when I have the oil changed next time.
The dash lites that come on are when the key is in the "on" position and the engine is not running, but the entine is running. The mechanic, I do trust him, states that this is a warning that the Alternator is not charging the battery and is 90% sure that it is a bad Alternator. This happens only in the mornings and it goes away when the car warms up after about 20 or 30 minutes of running.
The battery light, the break, and another light (I can't remember what it is but it is the upper right corner of the dash) stay on after the car is started. they go away at reves upward of 2000 or 3000 rpm's, but when idling they are solid on.
Ah. Yes, then your mechanic is right: your charging system is malfunctioning. Especially if you have ABS. You should get that straightened out ASAP; it's no fun when your alternator dies. You might also want to test your battery too.
Thank You verry mutch. I hope that the clicking is nothing that is too harmfull. I need the car to last for at least another year. I absolutly love it. It has so mutch get up and go and even though the struts are bad, it corners like no other car I have owned.
When you said you might adjust the clutch, do you mean it's out of adjustment? Does it engage really late and there is no freeplay at the top? If this is true, and you have a clutch cable, then it might need adjusting. There is a "squealing" noise when the cable is adjusted too loosely and your clutch pedal is all the way up, pushing it down only a centimeter will make it go away. If that is the case, try tightening down your clutch cable, or if you don't know how, have someone do it, it takes about 5 minutes.
When I first got the car and was too stupid to realize what was wrong, I drove the car around like that for almost a year. So I know the sound well.
