Turbo going bad?/replacement

Post by dwreck30 »

My turbo has been making some wierd noises lately and I would like to replace it before it is totally shot. There is a stock one on ebay right now and have been watching it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT Would this be a good choice to replace it with as far as the turbo condition? Sideplay? Thanks

Hey- someone local- Spokane-Sandpoint here. For the price, you can't beat it. I saw that on ebay today too.

If you are just looking to replace, go with it. You can have it looked at in Spokane while you still drive the one you have on. Then replace it when you have had it looked over yourself.

But if you have the money, why not upgrade??

What kind of weird noise is it making? Unless it's metal on metal grinding or you leave a smoke cloud behing you it should be fine.

Looks like a good price on that used turbo.

A couple of the Big Rig places specialize in turbos. They will have to order parts special because we do not have diesel truck turbos, but they can do all the work- and they know what they are doing.

But yeah- what kind of noises are you getting?

Anytime I am on boost and let off or shift, the sound it makes is like something is wobbling. Weird example, but you know when a toy cars whell doesn't spin ferfect? It sounds like that.

That sounds like it might be compressor surge.

Is it possible the blowoff valve is malfunctioning? Can you check its three hoses (the two big ones and the one little one) to make sure they're all in good shape?

Everything looks good, but I did do the coffee mug trick and I don't recall it making the sound before. Could this be a problem?

I am up in Sandpoint right now, but when I get back to Spokane on Friday, you might give me a call and we can compare and see.

I did the mug mod, and no issues.

So it might be the hoses, or???

Are you coming through Coeur d' Alene? If you are we could just meet up here somewhere. That way I don't have to drive into Spokane.

The mug does allow you to hear the turbo spool up more and stuff, since the resonator's primary purpose seems to be to muffle that sound.

So it's possible the cause of the wobbling has always been there, but only once you removed the resonator could you hear it.

Maybe if dscoobydoo's willing you guys could swap blowoff valves for a few minutes and see if that helps.

not sure what time I will be there. I will be going from Sandpoint to spokane this thursday night or Friday morning.

What is your schedule 5-9pm Thursday or 9-11am Friday?

IF that won't work, I have 4 days off, so driving out there is not a big deal to me

For reference, my stock BOV was malfunctioning with the stock turbo. Compressor surge = teh suxors.

It could also be a malfunctioning wastegate.

Compressor surge sounds like a shuffling sound (ticktickticktickticktick).

Wastegate's flutter.
