Recommendations on exhaust upgrade for N/A 92 Legacy Sedan

Post by wolfxvii »

Hey guys,

I finally found this haven for subaru legacy fans, and was wondering if anyone of you could give me some advice on the best upgrade that you know of for a 1992 Subaru Legacy Sedan 5MT.

It already has a Freeflow muffler with 4" tip, it sounds sweet, but I want it so that it's loud all the time, no just when i put my foot down or take it off at higher rpm's.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Was thinking of putting a 2.5" pipe from the cat back to the current muffler.

2.5" is pretty big for an N/A, espically one that doesn't flow as much as the EJ22.

You'd gain noise, but likely lose power. I wouldn't go higher than 2.25".

Run a straight pipe if you want loudness, it's probably not THAT loud, lol.

No, I was being sarcastic. Straight pipe is LOUD, nice, but LOUD on a suby.

Just get a straight pipe, it'll be plenty loud. But you'll lose the 4" tip...

heheh ok, straight pipe i assume you mean no muffler... cause that's illegal here in New Zealand, they cracked down on 'boyracer's recently and confiscate loud cars.

You must have a muffler in other words , and a new law having the catalytic converter is coming in next year so no point removing that, also heard that it takes away the 'subby' sound, same if i do the headers.

I must say that I dont mind losing performance, as Im getting a new car once this is paid off for that, this is going to be a show car in the later stages. :P

hmm, then what about just a flowmaster or something of a louder muffler?

I don't quite understand the goal, you want to be annoyingly loud, but legal, and don't care about losing performance?

Do they have Pep-boys around you? Any of their bigass mufflers will do all of those things.

No we have a place called pitstop if you've seen High Octane before :) download it on dc++ or some download program, its a good larf :P

Ummm my goal is loud , but not so much that cops pull me up every block that i go around.

Mind you they do have a little leeway for subaru's because someone had them up about it because they're already loud.

So yeh just give me all the recommendations and i'll jot them down like i have with the straight pipe etc, I can get a warrent of fitness cause of my dad, the only problem is the cops.

Any "ricer" muffler will sound loud all the time.

i left the main cat that the o2 sensor is hooked up to at the point where the two headers meet. took out the secondary cat and everything behind that. then put in one resonator, they are sometimes called glasspacks here, it was really loud and definately sounded like a subaru. it set off car alarm if i cracked the throttle just right. in fact it was too loud (i have two small children) qnd i lost my low end throttle response.

the first resonator was towards the front, added a second one where the muffler was. and i quited down nicely but still sounds cool and i got more low end throttle response.

at the first rallycross i took it to my friend thought someone was driving off w/his GN '02 WRX!

my brother put a similar setup on his ej18 powered impreza and had similar results. they sound very similar to turbos.

oh and we both used 2.25" tubing. you get a cool popping when you lift off the gas it sounds awesome on startup when you give it that little blip to settle the rpm's down on cood mornings.

Greg - The high idle it to warm the car up faster. It does this on all cold-engine startups (at least both of my Subaru's has). After 5 minutes it settles down to it's normal lopey idle.

My stock exhaust is pretty damn loud. It's loud enough anyways. Burbles, sounds good, pops slightly. Scares women and small children, just like it should.

yeah i know that. but it is still fun to crack the throttle every morning and when i leave work at midnight. and it really doesnt hurt anything. and yes i know it settles down on its own. but i have had no ill efects by not waiting 5 min to drive. i have better things to do w/my 5 minutes like hug my kids. and i have put 100k on my two legacies in the last 5 years here in the great white north.

Though there are reports of whistling, a WRX muffler can be made to fit. It's not super loud but still sounds fierce. And the pipe diameter is not overkill for a NA. I really miss the off throttle burble on the 2.2L Legacy I had a WRX muff on, I can e-mail a sound clip if you're interested.. BTW Greg, (caution hi-jack in progress) keep a watch in Fargo for a faded green wagon with a WRX bark. My old Leg sat at Muskatel for a few months after I traded it in, but it's gone now. I really wonder who has it :(
