EJ22T build up
Hello there. im in the midst of putting toghether a new EJ22T shortblock i purchased. 400 flywheel hp is my goal. can this be done with the stock 2.2 turbo heads and cams? the reason i ask is because i have doubts and was thinking of using 2.5 heads that flow better.
So far this is what i got:
-NEW EJ22T short block from subaru
-Complete EJ22T engine with 102k miles.
-Garrett T3/T4 turbo 63Turbine a/r and 57 trim commpressor
-SDS programable DFI
-Miller tig welder
-VenomRacing 650cc injectors
I need testimonials guys...i want to make the right descision. anybody that has achieved this hp mark or close to it with the stock heads please reply. thanks to all for reading this post.

You can get 400 crank hp with the stock heads. It'd probably be a good idea to change cams, depending on the type of hp/torque curve you're looking for.
Rod, aka subie_do is doing a build up right now.
May want to pm him.

Cams? where can i get these cams? i was'nt aware they existed. Are they weld up's? the only thing ive ever heard of cams for the 2.2 is from subylyc they prep 2.2's for aircraft. they remachine the cam bearing journals so that the cam sits closer to the folower thus creating more lift, but the cam profile stays the same. thanks for the info.

Has anybody ever heard of Paeco? Its a company that does all sorts of builds of all sorts of engines. They have a huge catalog with all sorts of crazy powerful subaru engine builds, they do heads, everything. But I have never heard of anyone actually getting work on a subaru there. I just wonder if they are as impressive as they look? You could do a search for Paeco (maybe) engineering. They had what they called a stage 2 super reliable build of the NA EJ25 that was over 200, maybe like 210, 220 I think, and race builds over 300.

I know Primitive lists a 2.2 in their rally car, they might have some answers for you, http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/index.htm

thanks for the e-mail.
-K- thanks. primitive racing are the ones who recommended pantera specialties to me.
Do a Google search on paeco and find some threads that i read, lets just say i wont be using their services.
They told me at Cobb Tunning that fully ported 2.2 heads flow the same as 2.5 heads that are not ported. I think that Im gonna use the stock 2.2 longblock and see what it could do. As i develop my tunning skills with that
i will be building the new shortblock with some pauter rods and 2.5 dohc heads that i bought. these heads are missing the four cam sprockets and the valve covers. If any one has these items and are willing to sell them im the man. I also need the timing covers and idlers and tensioner. thanks to all for you help. Im outy.

Grinding the cams is a pain in the bum, because you then have to make up shims. We have a cam engineering shop down the road from my home, and what they do is build up the lobes increasing the duration and doesn't require any other mods.
Also make sure you modify your fuel rail delivery other wise you will melt some pistons for sure.

The best value for money heads are the Subaru outback 1997-1998 model, they are a solid lifter large bucket head, the only mod you need to make to fit an EJ20 is port out the inlet port to match the EJ20 inlet.
Some of the later impreza and TT heads are also good as they also us sodium filled valves, but usually much much more money

The engine in question is a 2.2 Subielyc does not grind the cams. they machine the head so that the cams get closer to the valve, creating more lift. Weld up cams are not to good i heard because they dont last especially with tighter springs. The factory makes the lifters and the cams out of compatible metals that dont wear each other out. ive also heard that anything that is casted will not accept welding to good. IM gonna do a do it yourself basic porting(EJ22T heads) and clean up any rough casting in there, smooth things out and use the stock cams. If i get 400 fwhp i wont need to use the 2.5 heads.
Well maybe i will when i get bored of the 400 hp.
