older non-legacy model question

Post by isotopeman »

A neighbor at my apartment complex recently got a 93 legacy sedan after a neighboring apartment complex' tree crushed his old 83 or so GL 4wd wagon. I liked the wagon and was wondering if an EJ22 would fit one of those.

The EA series and EJ series engines do NOT have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. So therein lies the only real hurdle in doing this.

There are two options:

1) mudrat79 on the USMB has EJ-to-EA adapter that will allow you to bolt up an EJ engine to an EA transmission. There may be other ways for the home mechanic to engineer his own way, but I know he has done it successfully and offers his idea to others.

2) Just grab an EJ transmission as well, and put the whole drivetrain in it.

Friggin nature! Why do trees always fall on these cars?

heheh
This one fell after the property owner was confronted about the threat posed by his dead trees covered with that invasive kudzu vine (it's what killed them by the way). It was also a pain to us to rid the stuff from our complex, and then return because they do nothing about it. One morning - CRASH! The massive tree fell over the wall (we're downhill from them on a slope) and landed on the Subaru, a new Lexus that had never even been tagged yet, and a Jeep Cherokee. What pissed me off the most was the tree-owner settled immediately with the Lexus and Jeep owner, but after talking with Raja - a really cool guy from Lebanon who just doesn't know the system here, he offered to replace his sunroof. The roof and tree were in the friggin seat-bottoms; what the heck would a sunroof be good for! Some other neighbors helped get the guy to pay for the car as he should.
But back to the question, I've liked these cars a lot and would like to find a cheap one somewhere. But they just don't have much power as they are. So it sounds like the EJ22 and transmission fit these. :-)

Those cars are awesome. Rigidity of a wet noodle, but they're tough and a blast to drive. I enjoyed mine much more than the Datsun Zs I had and pretty much anything else I'd driven. I think an N/A EJ22 would be a perfect match for one of these. If I could find a 1983/4 5MT 2 door hardtop with a decent body I'd drop the Legacy turbo project and concentrate on rebuilding my spare EJ22 to 10.5 CR and clean up the heads a little. With ~2200 lbs that car would move!
