hey Matt Monson aka Dr. Frankenstein!
i see on nasioc that you finished the frankenmotor project.
please share the story over here too.
that sounds awesome.
my brother and i will probably do this on our 90 rallyx machine. especially if the hp gains you expect are accurate.
we will probably weld the front diff. to compensate for the extra power as it is a FWD.
glad to hear it worked. cant wait to try it myself.

haha...I've never been called out before. I was waiting until I had the pictures developed to do a full write up and post if for you guys. I have just been mentioning some things over there because a few guys are currently starting to build on and doing research.
The car runs great. Turned over first try. After we got the exhaust manifold back on and adjusted the throttle cable and clutch cable we took it out and beat on it a bit last night, and promptly ruptured on old tired coolant line we had reused.
Power comes on at 3200rpm. It pulls hard to about 5800rpm and then falls flat on it's face. It still has the stock 1.8l headers on it, and they are smaller than 2.2 or 2.5l headers in diameter. A set of Cobb's should remedy that a bit, but we still figure the heads themselves will run out of steam around 6200-6400rpm.
Here's the short version of what we have done to date:
Phase I EJ25 (thanks to Xephyr)
Phase I EJ22 heads
Stock EJ18 manifold, wiring harness and injectors.
Reflashed Al (ala torque chip) ECU with 7000rpm redline. Stock fuel and timing maps
Exedy 14lb flywheel
Exedy stage I clutch and pressure plate.
Delta 220 cams (these are made by Comp cams and cost $65 a cam!!!) w/shims under the HLA's
Snorkelectomy and Perrin Drop in filter (stole it from Diz's STi!)
I am guessing it currently is running around 180hp at the crank. Diz won't dyno it until he gets the headers on there unless I want to pay for it. But it feels real similar to how my RS felt this fall when I took the headers off to pass smog. Hopefully it will break 200 w/ the headers and dyno at around 145-150whp...

yay! glad to hear it worked. i had a feeling it would work out awesome. i knew some people were worrying too much about the fuel and timing.
do you feel like sharing some more info about the cams? i understand if you dont.
my brother and i will probably try this on the 90 this spring.
why did you use the ej18 stuff? just what you had laying around?

Well the cams are a standard grind that Delta sells. Any of you guys could order the same cams for your EJ22E for an addtion 15 na hp. Just ask them for the 220 grind. I am pretty sure the 220 stands for the duration.
As for the 1.8l manifold? We used it because this car is a '94 1.8 Impreza. We had a Legacy turbo manifold all cleaned up and ready to use, but once we pulled the manifold off the EJ18 to remove the wiring harness, we saw that it would fit and bolt right onto the 2.2 heads. We figured why rewire if we don't have to.That and Xephyr was there and he informed us that the 1.8l and 2.2l injectors were the same. There are a few other subtle reasons as well, but I will wait until I right this up in detail with pics to address them.
One last comment. I have been led to believe that this set up will not be quite as potent if you are using a 2.2l NA ECU. The 1.8l is pretty agressive on timing advance up top and prevents it from running too rich and wasting potential power. If one were to use a 2.2l ECU, I think an AFC would be a worthy investment...

Interesting info about the cams. That's a pretty damn good price for 15 hp.
Where does the hp/torque gain occur? lower rpm, midrange, high, etc?

Why do you say that? If the grind helps the engine breathe better, the gains would probably be at higher RPM's. However I'm not sure of the stock duration right now, so I'd to check that.greg donovan wrote:i would venture a guess that it is all gained at low RPM.Legacy777 wrote:Interesting info about the cams. They help in the mid to high end. They actually come with some shims to place under the HLA's to help minimize the float at higher RPMs, as these cams are also used in gyroplanes that regularly rev to 7500rpm with their freer flowing exhaust and intake...

Any chance they have a dyno chart of before & after with the cams?

i thouhgt you were talking abut the build in general not the cam specifically. as far as the cams go i have no idea but matt just answered that.Legacy777 wrote:Why do you say that? The engine didn't exist prior to the cams, and I mentioned our dyno plans in my #1 reply...Legacy777 wrote:Any chance they have a dyno chart of before & after with the cams?

I was referring to the company selling the cams. To see if they actually did dyno testing to verify their claims, (if they actually claim any improvements), and to see exactly where gains were made, and if any losses showed up due to the cams.Matt Monson wrote:The engine didn't exist prior to the cams, and I mentioned our dyno plans in my #1 reply...Legacy777 wrote:Any chance they have a dyno chart of before & after with the cams?

awsome job matt! I have actually been thinking of doing pretty much the same thing to my 91 L wagon. Now I have some added inspiration!
Once I throw my ej22t in my 98 RS, I'll have that spare block sitting around....might as well use it
what do you estimate your CR is ? And what octane are you using? I'm scarred of the premium gass prices!...alcohol injection might be a nice option.
also...with 225k miles on my car, I am a little worried about the heads. Did you rebuild them at all? Where can I get a rebuild kit?
Can't wait for the writup!.....again nice job!

The car is running really well now that we have sorted out a few issues. We are installing an intake on it tonight, and should have headers in a few weeks. We also added a torque chip the other day and no longer have a 112mph speed limiter or a throttle bog at 4000 rpms when it switches maps.
Now that it is tuned properly, it pulls hard to 6200rpms, even without the headers. It took a stock GSR at the stoplight the other day...
