WRX hoodscoop yes or no?
I have read thru the posts and am undecided and still confused. I am going to put on a Saab 900 IC in the next 2 weeks.
I understand that it would be good to have more airflow and our hood scoop is kinda small.
That said I want to put on a bigger hood scoop. But I wont use one of those tape on hey look at my honda civic fake scoops. Is there any option besides cutting the hood to fit in a WRX hood scoop or Fabing one out of fiberglass?
Also if I were to cut it would it be worth the work since the WRX scoop is only a little bigger than ours?

Subaru Engineers actually were disappointed in the STi scoop. It creates turbulence and disrupts the airflow over the car (increasing drag). It was a last minute, release the STi already, bolt-on for an aggressive look. Ideally, the scoop would look like that on the WRC car, which is not only not as tall, but smoother.
You could cut a WRX scoop in, and it'll be good, but some won't like how it looks.

The story I read from an interview with Peter Stevens (the designer) stated that the STI scoop design was not the final design and that he doesn't like it. The reson it was chosen is because the meeting for the design's finalization was interrupted by the 9/11 flight lock-down and the old drawing went to production. Yet another thing to hate terrorists for.
I think if you're going to do a bigger top mount, you might as well do it shaker-scoop style and mount it to the intercooler.

I would say it all depends on how YOU think it looks.
Personally, I think the current scoop is Way too small. So I plan on taking a wrx scoop and modifying it. That way it does not look like the wrx scoop, but it gets more air into the intercooler.
But I don't think the wrx scoop looks bad.
BUt that is just my opinion.

I've put one on my hood. It's quite a long job if you want a oem look, ust cut the hood the exact size of the scoop, then you'll see that the hood framing is prefectly placed for the scoop to sit on.
Then fill the gap between the hood and scoop with fiberglass, spend 8-10hrs sanding it and voila. Looks really good on mine and didnt crack since a whole year.

Mhrallyteam - Do you have a good picture of how it looks?
Those that have done it, don't have good pictures of how it looks.
When looking at Matt's under-hood, I noticed that the framing looks to be in the EXACT right places.
But which scoop fits? The 02-03 scoops are different than the 04 scoops, right?

I have a MY02 WRX scoop that I'm going to cut in someday. It was WRB and I've been painting it white. I need to do about 2 more coats of white then a few coats of clear. I've had it for over a year though and haven't cut it in yet.
When I lay it on my hood where it should go I think it looks really good though. I'm just a little nervous about cutting it in.

Why would it look like the WRC's scoop? it doesnt even serve a purpuse. Its just there for deceration becuase the bonnet/hood scoop is a subaru trademark. I say use a GC8 A or B scoop (early WRX) as they look best on the legacyBAC5.2 wrote: Ideally, the scoop would look like that on the WRC car, which is not only not as tall, but smoother.

Yes, the newer WRC has its scoop as the air intake and uses a reverse manifold to FMIC.

Similar to the street car setup, where the air comes in from the front of the car. Less bends and whatnot though.

Senice 1997 they had used the reverse intake manifold, 2000 they moved the intercooler to the top grill position and turned the turbo 90deg so the inlet faced up where they used the scoop as the intake. In 2002 they changed back to basicly what they has in 1997!!!! altho the cooler is still in the top grill
