I know i have read something about this, i think it was on nosioc. I did a few searches and found nothing. My timing belt broke on tuesday.
I had the car towed to Tom Scott Subaru. I trust them because my parents have taken their cars there for about 12 years now. My mom knows the head of the service department so i dont think they woudl try to screw me.
I tried to call them but the guy was out for lunch. They called my mom and said that the timing belt needed to be replaced and that the cam was leaking some oil.
The next day they called her and said the bolt on the cam was stripped out. From what my mom told me she thinks the threads are stripped on the cam. Dose anyone know anything about this? i would not mind replacing a cam, but if something else can be done i would like try. Other than that my car is ok. FOR NOW.
Just in case you did not know this is an ej22T out of an 92 subaru legacy sedan. it is running an auto from a 95 legacy. The motor is in my 95 subaru legacy.
Where is the cheapest place to get a cam? should i just get one from the dealer?

It's single overhead cam, but there are two camshafts because there are two banks of cylinders.
I haven't heard much about custom cams for EJ22Ts... I guess the place I'd begin asking is at Cobb Tuning. But it's not clear that the camshaft itself needs to be replaced, and even if it is, that only involves disassembling one head, so switching cam profiles would be twice the labor since you'd have to replace both camshafts.

well my mom was the one that told me the cam shaft was stripped, she could not remember exactly what it was. well they called me the next day and said oh no it was not the cam, but the crank pully. it had been hit in the accident. so i got a timing belt, crank pully, oil change, and fix for oil leak on my cam for 403 dollars.

Thats funny because there is NO thread on the inside of a crank pulley.

You CANNOT strip that crank pulley - there aren't any threads to strip.
I hate to be the guy saying this, i hate it when people say this, but...
It's either the shops fault or their shafting you.

the crank pulley can get out of round or out of shape.....which I think is what dustin means......but I could be wrong.

yeah,
I'd ask to see the old parts. Anything that I don't do and take it some where.....I'll want to see old parts.

they did let me see the old pully, it was messed up. the new one looks new, and has like no signs of wear. i am still curious of how the pully gets bent. i would think that they are strong, and that just a small impact with the radiator fans would make it go all crazy, but i bet if the motor was running when it had contact then it would be easy to get it to bend.
