I finally got all the goofy stuff happening with my car all straightened out, I got the lights to stay bright where they belong, I got my idle to stabilize and smoothen out (and not stall anymore :lol: ), and my car now runs absolutely PEACHY!

Vikash, Josh, I must admit, the masters know their stuff :D I didn't think an ECU reset would make that much of a difference, but it totally and completely fixed the idle problem. I drove it to work heel-and-toeing it everytime I declutched to keep it from stalling, and did the reset at work. I drove it home without a care in the world. The car runs great.

Oh, and another thing: The battery light on my dash that I thought was out, works now that I've put this new alternator in :lol:

Vikash, I couldn't have figured any of this out without your help. You showed me how to diagnose the problem, by myself, with very little money invested, and it taught me volumes. Thanks a bunch! If I weren't 1500 miles away (and if I was 21 :roll: ) I would take you out for a couple brewski's right now :lol:

You're welcome, Michael. I'm really happy Patti's running well again. You used to brag about how well she ran compared to a lot of newer cars, and I'm glad that's back.

The ECU reset was just a standard suggestion. I'm sure half the board would say to reset the ECU if you have any kind of drivability problem. :)

I'm sure at some point we'll meet in person and you can buy me a soda or something ;). I don't drink anyway.

So since it was obvious that the voltage regulator wasn't regulating voltage right, and that it was failing to operate the idiot light, shouldn't you be able to file some kind of warranty claim with the remanufacturer?

Steve - There are plenty of good reasons not to trust me, but vegetarianism isn't one of them. I wasn't always a vegetarian, and even now I can still give good advice on how to prepare meats. And I do still eat meats that used to swim.

Aren't most alternators sold with lifetime warranties now?

You should come up to PA for next years speed and feed. That way I won't have the 'farthest travelled' award.

Some of it was a practical decision. It sucks to go out to a really nice steak house or upscale restaurant and just have fries or a salad. A grilled swordfish steak or salmon en croute is highly preferable.

Some of it was a health decision. Swimming meats often are healthier for you than walking or flying meats.

And some of it was a philisophical decision. Swimming meats are more often hunted/fished than farmed, even though aquaculture is getting bigger and bigger all the time.

8 replies and we've already drifted from fixing cars to seafood :lol:

I would have taken my old alternator straight back to where I bought it from, but alas, I lost my receipt :cry: I won't make that mistake twice lemme assure you.

The car does indeed run excellent again, it has its power back, it doesn't hesitate, and my head unit doesn't dim anymore!

I've had slight improvements with ECU resets in the past, not dramatic changes in how the car ran, that's why I wasn't expecting much with this one.

I'm guessing what happened was the ECU had learned the reduced load that the bad alternator was putting on the drivebelt and compensated accordingly, and the reset taught it over again what it's like to run with a new charging system.

Andrew (petridish38) can tell you that my car does indeed run extremely well for its age and mileage. And what's funny is I don't think I do anything really special, I just maintain it like it calls for.

Anyway, thanks again, and as I figured would happen later, I'm glad I didn't sell the car a couple months ago. :)

Yeah, basically the ECU learned all the wrong things while the problem was present, so when the problem went away it was acting wrong.

Vikash does indeed rock. I have to throw that in there. He rocks so much, when he gave me his phone number, I memorized it.. unfortunately, I called it and it wasn't the right place.. hmm... maybe I'll try again.

Runs better than my car did at (whats it at? 150,000?) Probably has a lot to do with the previous owners. I think my car was abused before i bought it judging from the lack of routine maintenance that had been performed, and the filthy interior. She's still goin strong though!

I hope this means that your problem is gone FOREVER now Michael...

It's at 140k now, and I didn't really get on it when you rode in it either. It really pulls hard when I get her going a bit :D

Another friend of mine drove it when I first got it, and then drove it next some time later, after I had fixed a few things, and he was like "Did you soup this thing up or something?" I was like, "No, I got it running right :lol:"

And I as well hope this solves my problem FOREVER too :) I have a new battery and alternator now, so they both should be extremely happy with each other.

My $.02

Vikash is indeed an affable, intelligent and worthwhile person. I've seldom met anyone I've respected from the very first encounter like I have Vikash. He's a gifted person who I feel lucky to know. Thanks man for all the help and moral support you've given me and other members of the board. It's good to know I can call you a friend. :)
