no kidding, that is impressive.
is the fmic plumbing going to be a bit of a tight fit under the headlights?

It is a bit cozy under the headlight, but 2.5" piping makes it. I have a little interference on the corner of the headlight, but there is enough room between the housing and the reflector to notch the headlight housing a little bit and reseal it up with some windsheild urethane.

Here's a better picture of how the elbows come off the couplers. I might have to weld a bit of pipe to the elbows to clear the bolt heads for hte bumper beam. A coupler and a clamp might not fit right there.

Also, a true AC delete isn't complete unless you remove the evaporator core.

^ You won't regret it! Just get one with infinite voltage and wirefeed adjustments. It is soooooo worth it.

Cool. Yeah I know I won't regret it.....Was going to do it last year....but I had too many projects going on to mess with it. Hopefully I can get the tune worked out, and can move onto other stuff.

Planning to test out the firewall? That's more work than I would have done, but good attention to detail!

^ Nah, just two different cars with two different goals. I've been plotting this for a couple years, but the wreck made me go for it with a new shell.

I just need my own TIG welder. I don't have $2500 laying around though. Nice clear coat will run about $500

Since this shell was so lucky to be assembled in the US, I think, I did not get holes for a clutch master cylinder. Jolly good time.

Image

I circled where it is supposed to go, and all cars with a J for a VIN first digit seem to have this, even if it was not a turbo car. My '93 L AWD 5MT sedan had the holes with a plug, but my '92 AWD 5MT wagon does not, and neither did this FWD car. Both the FWD car and the wagon have a 4 for a VIN first digit.

Here is where the holes go.

Since Josh went through this a couple years ago, he happened to have a scale drawing of the layout, which came in very handy. It was a little tough to line it up right, but I got close enough.

Image

And there you go. Pain in the ass and all....

Glad that worked out for you Dan. Once you get the clutch MC on there, nobody can tell it didn't come from the factory like that :)

I'm into motor stuff now. Started getting the EJ25D heads prepped for assembly. All the turbo lines are tapped and set, and I'm ready for cleaning. After that I'll check the valve lash, adjust if neccessary, and assemble.

Image

All the spots for coolant and oil, just have to drill and tap for coolant and the oil drain.

Image

A rough idea of how the lines will play out. I need a couple fittings, as always.

Image

I buzzed the exhaust side with a small rotary tool and a worn red scotch roll-lock.

Image

Measured and marked all the buckets/shims.

Image

Decided where the brake proportioning valve is going.

Image

And started messing with the new(ish) hood. All the studs in the scoop are spinning freely :(

This drill is older than my dad (54) and still rocks. 415 rpm of serious business.

I was going to do a full clean on the heads tonight so I could get the motor mostly together this weekend, but I found that the heads need to be decked. There is a nasty groove around most of the combustion chambers. Bummer. Somehow the factory headgaskets dug in as they were torqued down. That's hotrodden baby.

Before I cleaned the combustion chambers.

Five minutes later (I'm not joking)...

Image

Here you can see the nastiness. Hopefully it won't take more than .001-.0015" to get it out.

Easy Off oven cleaner. Just don't let it sit for a long time, and be thorough with spraying it off with water.

I sprayed them, hit them with a plastic brush one minute later, and sprayed them off after another minute.

I've spent days doing that with carb cleaner and the like.

It's starting to look like a motor. I set the intake and oil filler neck on just to look at a little bling blang.

My buddy and I also stripped the hood today.

Uppipes 101

Cut apart a subaru uppipe.

Image

Weld a bracket to the other flange and bend to fit the turbo where you want.

Image

Image

Connect the dots, and violla, you have an uppipe.

Image

Image

I need to add the wastegate plumbing, and make my downpipe fit.

It is a lot more time consuming than it looks. In and out, in and out, in and out comes the piping. Kind of like the wheels on the bus..........

The engine going in is a good step too.8)
Looks like the downpipe will be close to all that wiring. Are you going to coat, wrap, or heat shield it?

The picture doesn't really do it justice, but there is about 1.5" more clearance than before, since hte turbo is forward a bit. Its enough that I have to rework my wastegate's dump back to the DP since it is touching the CV boot. I will probably be wrapping the wiring near there. The wiring is all apart at the moment since I am amidst removing all the auto tranny wires, which is a lot of wires, lol.

The uppipe is actually really close to the power steering lines, so I for sure need to wrap the uppipe and those lines. Melting those would spoil my day.

Hopefully I can finish the hot piping this weekend and the cold piping next week. I wish my buddy with a TIG welder wasn't 45 min away.

^ Really? It looks bigger than it is, I promise. Thats only a 3" inlet. Cameras do funny things.

It honestly only has 75-100hp on a VF39. If I set it next to a 40R that would be laughable.

If you really want to get picky, its a GT2871R 56 trim with a T04E compressor housing (I think, on the housing). Essentially a GT3071R with a 2.7mm smaller exhaust wheel.

Here's a GT3782 for comparison, with a 4" inlet. Garrett's seem to have large compressor housings compared to IHI or Mitsu turbos.
