My insurance has my car listed with automatic seat belts and abs. All I gave them was the VIN. With that code, you can tell anything about a car.

Like I said, at the worst, Involuntary vehicular manslaughter, and I doubt you'd even get that. ESPICALLY if you called the cops immediately after the incident, and were forward with everthing.
Anyone remember what Ted Kennedy did with his Lincoln?

I've been able to lock up my tires with no problem, and other times have abs kick in when not needed. I think I may have a fucked up sensor though.

You keep saying that. ABS is NOT a saftey control device. The US DOT never says that ABS saves lives. In fact, they say that it can actually HINDER driver performance if it's not properly used (which could never be proved in court). If ABS was a saftey control device, it would be required by the FMVSS. But it's not. They would have to prove that deactivation of ABS systems contributed to the accident, and they couldn't do that. It's not that they wouldn't try, but they would have to prove that the driver was unable to slow the car faster without ABS than with.
You could take it to court, but try proving it. Good luck.
With my RE070's and after the brakes are nice and hot and the tires are hot and sticky, I can lock the wheels up reguardless of ABS being on or off. ABS tried, but failed to control the wheels.
Fuck, a shark lawyer could claim that you used non OEM tires, and that contributed to you hitting the pedestrian. But they won't. Because the one thing that Jury's hate, is when they are insulted through prosecution. It's almost a sure thing that every person on the jury has some non-OEM part on their car, and saying that non-OEM parts were the difference between life and death, is bullshit.

My car is listed on my insurance as having ABS. It never has and I have no idea why they think it does. No lawyer is likely to ever check the VIN for such a thing anyway. I'd bet my book they'd never even think of the disabled ABS argument unless someone mentions it or there's some grossly obvious disablement to the eye. Most people also drive cars with faulty equipment of some kind. Try finding a hanging jury on the argument of improper maintainence on a 10+ year old car.
That said, juries are cross sections of the population, most of which is dumber than bricks. These are the same dickwads that award criminals for being injured while robbing someone's house.

Explain this. How can you not be impending lock up, and yet have the ABS engage.

LaureltheQueen wrote:Many of the legacy's did not have abs though. By removing the abs system and replacing it with a stock non-abs setup, there would be no proof that an system ever existed on the vehicle. We all know that with subaru's shoddy record keeping(688 turbos?), they wouldn't be able to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the car came with abs.
Sure there is, your trim code can tell right off the bat. If you had a turbo there's no doubt it came with ABS, same with Auto AWD LS's and LSi's. There are other ways too.

That didn't happen to me. I just disabled ABS that day because I didn't want it kicking in on the gravel.
A bad or misaligned sensor can make ABS engage before you lock up. If there's too much of a gap between the tone wheel and the pickup, on deceleration it could appear to the computer that a wheel stopped turning even when it's still rolling.

Ahh, I thought you had said ABS engaged when you were braking for a turn, and that's why you disabled it.
I've had the ABS unit clicking away and had my wheels lock before. Usually in the hot and dry, with hot, sticky rubber and hot pads.

Apparently I was smoking a lot of crack that weekend, so maybe I did say that...

Lol, I dunno. I disabled ABS that weekend too, and haven't reconnected yet

It happens to me all the time. When you are braking very lightly and the tire goes over a crack or pothole the ABS goes like mad.
Maybe the sensor just wigs out from the vibration. Or maybe it's because the tire is unconstrained for a millisecond while its over the crack allowing the brakes to really slow it down (so the computer thinks it locked).

My favorite thing about no ABS, is coming off of Airpark road onto 124 towards AndrewTech. There's a little step down before the turn.
Coming into that hot on the brakes, you can feel the wheel lock when it's in air for that split second, and start rolling again when it touches down. It's a very different sensation, knowing that if ABS was still on, I never would have known what was going on under the car.

Wouldn't a bad sensor cause a code to be thrown, which would make the ABS not function?

I don't think the sensor wigs out or it's anything abnormal. The ABS is functioning normally. Your tire has less grip, there's more braking force on less area, it slows that tire more than the others to the point of impending lock up, so the ABS activates.

Depends on how it's bad. If it's just not picking up as strong a signal as it should, you'll get what I described. In a sense, it'd be overzealously detecting lockup.

A lot of times I find find little peices of metal stuck to the sensor will make the ABS act funny, and not throw a code.

gt2.5turbo I'm all for it what ever you have to do to make room for gofastparts.
Yes abs does lock up while going side ways I know this form experience and no abs won't stop you any faster. The things that will are bigger rotos, pads, calipers and wheels.
Abs will help to stop you from flat spotting your tiers if your always mashing on the breaks way to hard.
I know this isn't going to be any help gt2.5turbo but just as a warning if your plan is to remove the all the abs components and are ever planning on putting them back the speed sensor is a pita to get out of the hub and expensive to replace. So in other words don't use a screwdriver to pound the speed sensor out of the hub. Tends to punch holes through it.
pump your breaks and drive slow homie

I ripped out the ABS and all the stuff that works it without any problems.I think total weight was about 65lbs.But then agian for rallying you don't need an ABS.I left the pipes there and hook them up with tee pieces from a RWD corolla
Cheers
