Most of the guys running Ej series engines in ther early car opt for the megaqquirt to manage things. It's a way simpler install than putting in a modern harness and ECU. That's Ej25 with carbs I posted above is run on a megasquirt...

Converting HLA to Solid lifter has been done, at least in the EJ22T heads. A built set of EJ22T heads flowed more on the bench than EJ205 heads, by a significant margin. One of the mods was converting HLA to solid lifters. Its a shame I don't know more about this setup, but it wasn't done at our shop.
My current 22T has the solid lifters. The mechanic I bought it from swapped it over. I don't really know the details, though.

btw some guy on the megasquirt forum decoded the subaru crank trigger wheel for 4 bangers, though I have no idea how that applies to an EG33. EDIS is probably the best bet.
