I have 4 wheel disc. I don't think the Brightons even got drums.
I believe only the Impreza got drum brakes.
And Josh, your original assertion is correct: It was to be cheap. Because when the Impreza first came out it was definitely an econobox...and a very good one at that. An Impreza could be had brand new for around 12 or 13K dollars in the mid 90s.

Yup, actually, they did. The mid-90's were weird for Subaru....
I've seen Foresters with drum brakes even....

Well, the foresters were Impreza based, so they got drums just like the Imprezas did.
