G4 Storm or G4 Extreme? Basically, everything said and done, figure about $1200 and $2000 respectively. That is with the 5 bar MAP sensor which is about a $180 option.

However if you currently have a G2 or G3 ECU, you can have it ugpraded for $160 to the G4.
So if you can find a G2 Plus for a reasonable cost, you can then get it upgraded to a G4. The only thing you will not have is Ethrottle capabilities due to that being an additional hardware function that was added to the G4 ECU's.
I'm planning to have mine upgraded. I'm waiting to see if I need to send in the ECU or if they can send me an firmware upgrade.

Found out it is a firmware upgrade. I should be upgrading today.

Just upload the G4 firmware like a usual update?

Yeah pretty much.
The tricky part is that the tables are not all the exact same size, so you've got to go through everything to verify that all the correct values are inputted.
I was also told that I have to perform this first configuration/verification after flashing using the PC online with the ECU.
I am supposed to get the firmware today, and I'll probably try and work on it today or tomorrow.

I haven't tried for a while since my Link is on my counter not in my car, but I was never able to successfully update my firmware...I am bad at computers.
Congrats on getting a good tune and being able to drive your car. I still can't decide if I'm putting my stand alone in the T-leg or doing something else with it...Kinda depends if I can find a base map for a Link to run a 1jz...

I had some issues when I initially tried to update my firmware. For some reason if my wireless NIC is enabled it won't allow me to connect to the ECU and update the firmware. If I disable it, then I can connect just fine.
I don't have a good tune yet. I'm still waiting on the G4 firmware, and then will go from there. Unfortunately, I'm going to be traveling a bit for work the next several weeks, so not sure how much time I will have to play with the car. We'll see.

You don't use the firmware update from their website?
If you could pass the firmware along that would be swell

You talking to me or Grayguy?
I just used the firmware on their site for the G3.
I'm not sure what I'm going to get for the upgrade from G3 to G4, so we'll see if it's registered to a specific serial # or how they do that. Because i wondered too about how they'd keep that from spreading.....

I assume he's talking to you, cause he's the one who told me the firmware updates are even possible haha.

I was asking josh.
I'll probably so this when I get her going.

I got an email today, and I had to provide my ECU serial, so I'm guessing the firmware will check for that specific serial.
I kind of figured it would be something like that so firmware upgrade for the G4 is not passed around.

I bet the firmware isn't that secured to where you can just use a hex editor to change the serial number it needs to look for. But not having a G3, the firmware, nor the software

can't really say much. But any who, How much power are you going for Josh, or are you trying to go for and EMU to just run off a MAP and IAT?

Any on the Links (at least, in the last several years) let you run MAP (or MGP) and IAT. Or MAF if you really want to. Speed-density rocks, but is a little more work.
And damn them on needing a serial number or some shit( sounds like BS to me). Its not like we can do everything a G4 can do. I wouldn't want to run 2.5 ohm injectors in a peak and hold format with the pathetic cooling our ECU's have.

Anything worth having is going to always be a little more work

Well I got an email stating to just use the latest G4 firmware, and that it'll ask for a code, and to just input that when asked. So I don't know if there's some checking routine in the generic firmware for a certain code combination. Probably like a product key for windows or other software.
I don't know we'll see. I'll try messing with it tomorrow when I get back or Friday.

Updated the firmware yesterday. It does ask for a code. Now I have to go back through the default MAP and reconfigure the .pcl file to how the G3 was setup.

Finally got around to converting the G3 MAP to the G4. The Legacy has taken a back burner to all the crap going on right now.
Anyway, like I said, I got the conversion done. It's not terriblely difficult, but there's a few things that cause some crankiness.
I started the car up the other night on the G4 firmware. It started right up, and ran actually very well. It's amazing how much better it runs with the proper injector deadtimes.
I had some issues with the initial loading of the MAP, so I'm going to verify that I don't have that problem any more, and I also need to check out the internal ECU logging. It was producing some weird numbers.
Once I get that done, I'll be ready to go do some tuning.

Well, I've got the first "significant" update in a while. I had been tweaking things here or there, but it was apparent I was not really getting anywhere fast. After doing some more homework, I talked with one of the open source tuners in Dallas,
AWD Tuning, and he felt there were significant gains that could be had.
Anyway, I drove up to Dallas this past weekend, and he road tuned the Legacy. They're a small shop, very helpful & thorough. They even put me up in their spare bedroom!
The results.....let me say, these were the results I was expecting. The car pulls smoothly throughout the entire rpm range. It was a little cooler up there, probably in the mid to upper 60's lower 70's. At that temp I was running around 19 psi of boost.
I do not have any dyno numbers, but feel confident that they are quite a bit more than what I had. I'm going to try and go out tonight and do some logging to see how the weather change affected anything since it's hot and muggy right now in Houston.
I think I put on almost 900 miles this past weekend.....that's more than I've put on in the past year!
I'm glad things are finally coming together. knowing myself, I will probably continue to tweak and play with it, but at least there's a good base.

That's a great feeling when your project has some sort of payoff. That must be pretty quick on 19psi!

Yeah it feels good getting it running. Like everything, there's still some little tweaks that I think need to be done.
I drove it last night, and it's making about 17psi here in Houston with the warmer temps. Link definitely needs to get their closed loop boost control setup.
Also, it's running a little richer due to the warmer temps. Since the IAT sensor after the TB really doesn't give a good reading for ambient temps, I'm thinking about putting another IAT in the airbox so I can monitor actual ambient inlet air temps and that will better keep the AFR's inline with what they were tuned at.
This is one of those things that I think MAF based setups have an advantage at.
