beatersubi wrote:All of this is much easier with the radiator out, as well. If you're going to be pulling it anyway to repair the fan shroud mount, might as well get it out of the way. Its easy enough (two bolts, two connecters and four hoses), and if you catch the coolant in a clean container, it can go right back in when everything's back together.
Another excellent point! Coolant's already out since I planned to replace water pump / thermostat / rad hoses anyway, and the coolant was pretty dark and old so I planned on new fluid anyway. I can certainly remove the radiator at this point!
Also, at some point while this car was under the care of someone else that did not properly maintain it at all, the smaller hose nipple above the upper rad hose (passenger side) had apparently snapped off and was repaired hastily with some sort of putty. I think I should clean this all up and attempt to re-repair it with some appropriate high temperature stuff, if for no other reason than to know exactly how it was repaired.....
Thanks for the pics rallyak! Is the first photo of the driver's side of the auto trans? And I'm trying to place the second photo, is that of the top of the trans? I'm not as familiar as I should be with this

First pic is the passenger side and second pic is top view passenger side. Both of these holes are on the engine side, as you see in the pics my transmission is painted gray.

Here are some more pictures of the access hole on the bell housing

Regarding the cams, I too have concerns the timing belt will hold the cam pullies. I recommend using a big pry bar or screwdriver to lock the cam pulley like mentioned before. I'm not sure how you would lock the cam by removing the valve covers and personally wouldn't recommend doing anything like that.

Gotta get her done by next weekend.
Josh, the cams have a hex cast into them where a wrench can be placed to hold the cam. If one is replacing valve cover gaskets anyway, that would be a good time to loosen/torque cam pulley bolts.

LOL I'm not quite that ambitious; I'll be driving the more-fun '94 SS up to the meet anyway and as far as I can tell it should still make it! (the one I took to WCSS15).... clutch still squeaks a bit at the top after it gets warm but no slippage when engaged

...And that's probably a good way to help ensure the cams don't move once the belt is off, just keep a wrench on each side resting against some metal.... thanks for the tip!

Where is the hex? I didn't notice it on the cams I pulled out of my motor.

I must be remembering 25x cams. I could've sworn they all had the hex directly behind the first bearing, but I must be mistaken. Josh's photo-archives to the rescue once again.

Robert and I spent the day on the timing belt and cam seals. All was well, then the radiator upper steam hose showed us it was leaking. So called it a night inches from the finish because it needs to dry and we need epoxy. Lame.
We timed it right on the first shot though, fired right up! Then we remembered the trans cooler was off and made a mess too but still - Success!

Good to hear it was a success, even though you made a mess
