Josh, John, Ian, Sambo - many thanks for the advice. I can see that there
are some real enthusiasts out there, good stuff.
Looks like my plan of attack is:
New Springs and Struts
K&N Flat Filter or similar
2.5" exhaust
Snorkusectomy, maybe (what a brilliant idea though!)
Im gonna need a pay rise...
Josh could you confirm what you are saying about the MAF sensor? I read it
from your email, that it will be AOK if I stick to the standard air intake
box (even with a snorkusectomy performed) but can be dodgy with an open
style filter? I take it that Open style means the cylindrical type, rather
than flat filter.
Oh and one other thing. My auto box has a "manual" mode, a button you push
on the gear lever which apparently holds in 2nd and 3rd gears. I cant see
the difference between just moving the gearstick to "2" or "3", which
should hold the gear, and the manual mode. Any ideas?
cheers

Good things being mentioned here.....I'm mainly going to comment on the
cautions. If you do have the Twin Turbo, do not do anything or much to
it. The small turbo is a roller bearing turbo, and is easily over
spooled, and can cause like Ian said, need to be rebuilt.
As for intake....I'd really and highly recommend you just get a K&N drop
in panel filter, and remove the snorkel stuff in the fender.
I have replaced a MAF sensor $300 US. NOT CHEAP....worst thing is it
slowly went out...intermittently I would loose power....I chased this
problem for over a year. Second reason to leave the intake
alone.....you will be sucking hot air from the engine bay....plus you
will get more turbulent air, and MAF doesn't like that as much.

I just wrote this up like 10 minutes ago. It talks about me putting my
stock box back on and how much of a drastic improvement in engine idle
and smoothness there is. I also mention what I am going to do to
hopefully increase air flow for the stock box.
Instructions on how to remove the snorkel and such from the fender well
can be found here

Hope that helps.

If thats the twin turbo be very carefull when considering a larger
exhaust.
I have a friend outside of melborn who had one with a 3" exhaust from
the
turbo back and the first turbo would always fail and have to be rebuilt.
Everyone I've herd from says don't go bigger than 2 1/2" all the way

93 Legacy GT-S2 Wagon (BC-BF EJ20 turbo)
Paul,
You should be fine with the stock air intake, K&N drop in, and snorkel removed.
With putting on a POD style/open/cylinderical style filter, you are asking for some possible troubles. They may be less noticable on a turbo car, then a N/A car. But some of the reasons are going to be the same.
The first is your sucking air from the hot engine bay....not as good as getting air from the fenderwell. Second more vibrations usually, (this is usually because the intake where the MAF is, is not secured as well (again, may not be as much of an issue with the turbo cars))
Lastly, the way the air flows into the MAF. With an open style intake, you have alot more turbulant air being sucked in past the MAF, so it can't measure the air as well. The stock box on the older gen subies have a sort of nozzle type metal piece where the MAF actually bolts to the plastic box. This helps smooth the turbulant air out around the edges or boundary layers, and also speeds the air up a little as it's going from a psuedo infinate volume space (air box/atmosphere) to a vacuum in the intake.
I'm goin to try and get a pic of the mentioned piece this weekend.
As for the manual mode, this is what it does. You may want to check out my site as well www.surrealmirage.com/subaru I've got alot of good info on there.
Manual Button
The manual button has some controversy as two what its function is. But I'm here to disavow any of those rumors. Firstly, the automatic transmission normally runs a power split of 90% front 10% rear. This is under normal driving conditions. Secondly, the manual button ONLY works when the shift lever indicator is in the positions "3" or "2".
Ok, so you're ready to hear what this thingy does. It is a very primitive version of traction control. When the shift lever is either 3 or 2, and the manual button is depressed, it will keep the transmission from going into first gear. By doing this, you have less torque, more evenly distributed power, and a less chance to slip and slide around.
So to recap, when the shift lever is in the 2 position the transmission stays in 2nd gear. When the shift lever is in the 3 position the transmission chooses between 2nd and 3rd gear. If the shift lever is any other position then the two above, the manual button does nothing. The factory service manual does say that if the button is depressed when the shift lever is in the 1 position it gives a slightly more agressive fuel/shift map.
Hope this helps..
Josh
