I'm trying to find what's causing a whining noise coming from my
engine (EJ20G). Its gets worse as the car warms up, and increases in
volume with higher RPMS. I haven't noticed much loss in power in the
recent weeks, even as the sound has been more noticeable. I have
taken off all the accessories (P/S pump, alternator, A/C) and the
sound continues. Has anybody heard of this before?

Well, I've heard of it, but I'm not positive of the solution. If
it's the same kind of whine mine was, I believe it is a transmission
problem, rather than an engine problem. Does the whine occur while
the car is in neutral? If not, I would get the tranny checked out.
I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I won't know if that is
what was wrong with my car. My engine bearings wore out a couple
weeks ago, and I am going to drop in a turbo engine. Tranny is
going to be changed as well.

I took a GX 4WD liberty for a test drive one day (for a mate). Reved it to
about 5000 RPM dump the clutch the cluch did not slip one bit but this god
for sacken whin came out of the clutch area. I think that it was the thrust
bearing. It sort of came and went but I think that it was the first time it
had done this in its life and it should of only got worse. Meaning a
continous whin. By the way we left the piece of shit there. This problem was
only minor compared to the other problems.

Although probably ok on a GX, one would normally suggest not to dump the clutch at standstill and high rpm on a high powered Scooby - by the time the 4WD system has distributed the power the clutch will have disintergrated!

Doug, I'm starting to get the occasional slip at beyond 3500 rpm. Looks like time to start shopping around for a new beefy clutch! Had mine for 6 months - guy before me was a mech and he installed new clutch not that long ago but definitely a cheapo job cos I still got the receipt! Need one good for 300 horses cos I need to chase after Dave's 274bhp mint baby!! (probably wont even get anywhere near that tho!)

Although probably ok on a GX, one would normally suggest not to dump the clutch at standstill and high rpm on a high powered Scooby - by the time the 4WD system has distributed the power the clutch will have disintergrated!

Has anybody heard of this before?

whining from engine

Around $1000 Australian for the genuine article. It is a rip off and there are better out there for around the 600 mark. But I still have to look into it. I live in Newcastle Australia. Looks like we got the gun versions of thee Liberty ( Legacy ).

That's about right Doug! You can get some pretty nice performance
clutches for that much.
But Kam, i would recommend you find a reputable clutch shop in your
town and have him rebuild your old one. They can put a new surface on
them to whatever specs you like, and it doesn't cost too much at all!
Give it a try! George, Australia.

Toby Corkindale

whining from engine

Post by Toby Corkindale »

I'm in the market for a new clutch ASAP.. Current one slips under high-power
gear changes, or even worse, it slips if you start getting slightly bogged
off road. Got in and out of the field ok, but major clutch stink.

Did better than the people without AWD, about 25% got bogged.

Anyway.. yeah, subaru wanted like $1400 fitted which made me fall off my
seat. (The guy on the phone even said to me "hey, it sounds less if you say
it faster." so at least they had a sense of humour)

I'd be happier paying $600 like you suggested.. Any ideas what brand or make
that clutch was?

(I'm in Adelaide, AU)

Yeah make sure when you get your clutch done to increase the clamping
force on your pressure plate. Standard WRX spec is 1600pounds mine is
now 2200 and i feel it's perfect, really good response yet light
enough for traffic.

Doug Hancock

whining from engine

Post by Doug Hancock »

I knew mine was just sliping when I bought it 4000km ago and now I dump the
clutch at about 5000rpm and I sare I seen smoke. No more of that for a
while. It was pretty hot at the time though. It has 16400km on the clock and
it is standard. I dare say I would put it in myself and maybe a lightend
flywheel if I have some money left over.
Regards Doug
