Dead at 65 mph!!

Post by INCEv@webtv.net »

I had a real interesting friday. My wagon died at 65 mph! (crap) After
coasting to a stop and wandering why? I jump out and opened the hood and
didn't see anything, check the oil(full) checked for any bad signs under
the car (nothing)! Got back in and try to start it, just a free spinning
starter? Got back out looked at the front crank shaft pulley, had the
girl friend run the starter every thing turned? At about the same time I
noticed a hole in the timing cover(Oh Sh_t). I took off one of the cam
covers and rotated the motor "NO movement" (AAAAAAAAAAAAAA)! After alot
of dust kicking and #@$% I called for a way to get it home. I also
called my mechanic he said "Broken timing belt or a gear". I asked if
was worth fixing or junking the motor? Fix it he said! "The cams will go
to a neutral point in the rotation to save all of the valves".

After dismantling the front of the motor I found the cog idler had
ceased the bearings and broke the bolt holding it. I will know the good
or bad results latter today(I hope its ok) . :-\ Dan

I am pretty sure the 2.2T is a non-interference engine.......not
positive.....but I am pretty sure.....some of the other guys would
probably be able to tell you for sure.

Yhea. Non-interference. He'll be fine. But by the sounds of it, he might have to tap and die that post for the idler - now that's a b1tch!

Dan, how many miles on that car?

Dead at 65 mph!!

Post by INCEv@webtv.net »

191,000miles (48,000 miles more miles than last year at this time, after
going to Seattle 3+ times a week). I got the rest of the bolt out! The
threads are in very good shape(I am surprised),but I did tap the threads
any way. So far so good! :-) Dan

What is your mileage and when was the last time you changed the
timing belt?
