Intercooler Selection...

Post by morgie »

I've finally found the 'Cavern of ali-baba' in Montreal... and i now have a decision to make :

Buy a small but easy to fit Saab 900 intercooler,

or go the other way (like a guy I know here is currently doing), and fit a Audi 5000 1990 IC.

I'm very interested by the audi one.. but i'll have to do a little more fitting
What i like in the audi one, is that it give me the choice of wether put it Top-Mount or Front-Mount.

(both intercoolers are the same price : 150$CAD )

what do you think ?

How would you get it to the throttle body on that 5000 IC? Custom machining?

I tought of some 90degrees bent hose.

cut the long pipe a bit, put a 90 to go toward the Throttle body, put a part there to attatch the BOV, then another 90 bent to go into the throttle body.

from the turbo to the IC, it might not be complicated either.

That is a nice bit, though I'd think it just sent the signal to the ECU. If you can find the info on the output to temp it could be used. Might be nice to know the inlet temp anyway. :)

K : That's the problem, for the install setup that i have in mind, the sensor would be on the "inlet" and not the "outlet" :\ not verry usefull :\ heehe

JAson : Too late, the IC is bought :)

And I believe in order to use the USDM wrx intercoolers you have to get rid of the A/C.

nope, just gotta move some stuff around. If you're willing to work in an auri intercooler like that, then you'd have no issue moving stuff for the WRX.

so this is how i plan on making it fit .. I will need to make the ends customized.. the ic will be a bit more on the passenger side, so it will clear the hydro-clutch tank, and allow it to be lowered more.

Ok i did some little 3D artwork (Wahh i've got some eleet mad-Skillz ! )
just to illustrate the twisting i plan from the turbo to the IC... do you think that all that twisting is bad ? or ... whooo cares, bellow 25psi there is no prob ? :)

Image

in fact, that way i fear a big restriction with the 180... the other solution would be to invert the ports on the IC ... from the turbo, route a pipe under the IC to connect to the other side... (driver side), then, from the passenger side port, connect to the Throttle body

any thought ?

I think your might be missing something. I dont know how the core is in that intercooler but by way the inlet and outlet are on the same side it would appear that the intercooler is split down the middle and the air passes up one side and back down the other. This would mean that if you put a outlet on the other side you'd only be using half the intercooler due to the blockage at the inlet. Does this make cense to you?

Mike : You're 100% right, and that's the reason i'll remove the stock IC endings, and make custom ones, so i'll use 100% of the IC :)

I don't think that you will have that much restriction from the 180 bend. If you route the pipes under the IC there might not be enough room under with the coolent lines and all. One thing to think of is the heat comming off the turbo. If you have the line coming from the passenger side to the TB the heat comming off the turbo might heat up the outlet from the IC.
